Portable protection: Silicone or Hard case?

I've been trying to decide what kind of case I should get for my phone (Droid Incredible) and haven't got a clear consensus on a make or model, everything seems to be subjective. So I ordered a cheap $4 silicone case off ebay and am using that right now.

I feel like a silicone case would be better for drops, but I'm not 100% sure. And a hard case looks better. But function over fashion for me, what's the best call?

I have a hard case with a silicone slip cover thing over it for my iPhone. Works great. Made by Otter Box, not sure if they carry cases for your kind of phone though.

I prefer the silicone, the hard case just takes away all feeling and pleasure.

They don't...yet, but I'm not high on the prospect of spending $30-40 on a phone case, although they look pretty cool.

And for some reason I thought this was another type of protection being discussed.

I have the Body Glove case on my Droid Incredible.

It's a little bulky, but coming over from the Droid, and I had a case on that, it's def not any bigger.

Hard cases just don't seem like they will provide much protection if you drop the phone, almost like the case would break along with the phone.
