AT&T Kills Unlimited Data Plans, Announces Tethering for iPhone

Today AT&T announced that it will be eliminating unlimited data access for wireless devices, including the iPhone and the iPad, in exchange for new metered plans.

AT&T says the new structure will make data access "more affordable to more people," and will consist of two new options; DataPlus, which includes 200MBs of data for $15 a month, and DataPro, which grants users 2GBs of data a month for $25. If a subscriber exceeds their allotted data on either plan, however, they will be forced to pay additional fees.

Once the 200MB cap is reached in the DataPlus plan, users will be charged another $15 for another 200MBs of data, while DataPro customers will pay $10 for each additional gigabyte used.

To inform users of their data usage and avoid overages, AT&T will send text notifications as subscribers reach 65 percent, 90 percent, and 100 percent of their allotted data. Customers will also be able to check data usage online, through AT&T's iPhone app, or request it via text message.

AT&T's new DataPro plan will replace their current $29.99 unlimited plan for all smartphones they offer, as well as the iPad.

Current subscribers with unlimited data plans will remain unaffected by the changes, but will be given the option to opt into either of the new metered plans.

The new plans, AT&T says, will allow users to send thousands of emails, browse hundreds of websites, and up to 200 minutes of streaming video, but what about gaming? Multiplayer games on the iPhone and other wireless platforms generally require Wi-Fi connectivity for online use and the data consumed by those that don't is hard to quantify, but like all web-enabled functions, usage will inevitably add up over time.

Conveniently, AT&T's new metered data access plans will take take effect on June 7 -- the very same day Apple is expected to unveil the new iPhone.

AT&T also announced their plans to offer tethering for the iPhone later this year, which will allow users to link their iPhone to their laptop for wireless data access at an additional $20 a month. Tethering, AT&T says, will be released as part of iPhone OS 4.0.
This is a joke. I bet they end up losing some customers imo.

I'm gonna wait to pass judgement on this til I know how much data I actually use on average. I bet I'm not super high on the data usage, so I would probably save $15 a month on my bill. I'd be fine with saving $180 a year on my cell phone bill. It might be a good deal for me, but I don't like the fact of being able to "go over" my limit and then having to pay even more. At least with unlimited I don't have to worry about going over. But I did read where they were going to send you notices if you got close to using all of your data. I'm not sure how I feel about this overall.

Well this blows. I am on my iPhone all the damn time. When I'm at home, I don't hope on the laptop, I just pull my iPhone out. I have no idea how much I use monthly, but I like having unlimtded because I didn't have to worry about going over. I'm sure if I buy a new iPhone and I have to do a new two year deal, I'll use the unlimted plan, so... I may be switching carries once I can and go with a Droid or something.

pretty sure it is for new customers. If you have unlimited now you should be grandfathered in.

Even if I get a new phone and sign a new two year contract? I know for sure I am grandfathered in right now, but in the future?

            Hopefully it's like you're saying.

This is the deathknell to AT&T, especially if Verizon gets the IPhone.

Yes, you will be grandfathered in. I just recently bought the iphone and I carried over my previous plan + had to add the data plan. I am glad to have the unlimited even though I won't even reach the 2gb. Forget this tired pricing.

Doesn't AT&T pay out the *** for exclusive iphone rights?

I don't know a single person who has AT&T that doesn't have an iphone.

Apparently I don't use very much data. I looked on the AT&T site and the most I have used in the past seven months is 72 megabytes. I guess I will probably "opt-in" to the 200mb plan as it will save me $180 a year.

I don't upload a lot of pictures or watch a ton of youtube videos, never stream music, but do have emails with attachments every so often. I mainly surf the web and that doesn't run up your usage that much. If you download a ton of apps all the time, that will also crank up your data usage, but I usually get on average about 5 apps a month?

This is stupid. I'll be getting a new phone in the fall, and I'll being looking into other networks at that time.
