Worlds first flying car approved by FFA.

The vehicle has cleared a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulatory hurdle for craft classification by weight. A full-fledged production prototype might be just around the corner, according to multiple reports.
The price of a Terrafugia is expected to be around $200,000 and deliveries could start next year, assuming the vehicle passes crash tests. The company has envisioned its vehicle as finding a home with amateur pilots who live near air fields, but as any Jetsons' fan knows, flying cars might well be the wave of the future.

That's not really what I think of when I hear "flying car." You still need a runway to do anything other than drive on a road with that. That's just a small airplane that happens to be street legal.

When I think "flying car," I think of some kind of hover craft, like from the Fifth Element. Something that doesn't need a runway to get off the ground. I know that's not really feasible at this point, though.

With all the security restrictions they have now, I doubt this thing will ever sell more then 5, if that.

I actually think flying cars would be better if it was more like a helicopter than an airplane. The only problem is the rotor. If there was a way to make it smaller...

that is why I said they will never sell more then 5 if that. Too high of a terrorist risk.

Yeah, the street legality of this will last until a week after the first model is sold (if it's even legal now).

My father is one of top general aviation lobbyists and I've worked for the largest GA organization in the world and the largest state GA organization and nobody from those would consider this remotely reasonable.

That said, the "terrorist" risk of this is almost zero. This could take out a person or a car, but would be nearly incapable of killing someone standing more than 3 feet away from a large window. Against a building this would be almost laughable.

I would fail so hard trying to park that thing in a crowded lot. I'd finally get in my space and try to cut the headlights off and accidentally extend the wings. "What the....Oh ****! I'm sorry, sir! I'm sorry."

Considering the thing costs 200 grand I don't think I have to worry about that little nightmare scenario, though.

Sorry, I see all kinds of problems with this. Flying cars should never be released for obvious reasons.

I could imagine a spoiled rich kid high on E stealing his dad flying car to go pick up his girlfriend and end up crashing into a sky scrapper or some power line or cell phone tower.
