Re: The new 3D craze a flash in the pan or here to stay?

There is no way 3D makes any moves into the mainstream market anytime soon. There are just way too many hurdles to overcome in order to make this happen.

    1) Price will have to drop. New technology is always expensive and the prices will eventually drop. During this time frame the 3D technology will get better and cheaper, but not many will jump on the 3D craze now...to fund future ventures.

2)3D on small TVs would not have near the impact as on large ones. So now you need to make it to where a good portion of consumers can somehow afford those large tvs just to get any decent 3D pleasure out of them.

    3) Glasses suck and are uncomfortable for many for anything other than very short term viewing. You can notice people lifting their glasses up and trying to refocus their eyes during a regular 3d movie because it hurts their eyes.

    4) Cost of glasses. Not to mention you need to drop around 2-3grand on a 3dtv, you also need to buy glasses for your folks in the house...so now in a normal house of 4, you can add an additional 600+ just for glasses to your purchase.

5)Programing. Very few shows will utilize 3d, so the cost wont be justified.

    6) Viewing angles. All theaters are set up so you have an optimal viewing angle, just like projecters and the large Tvs.....if you sit anywhere offcenter or have any sort of glare, your viewing satisfaction is greatly diminished. So now people would pretty much need to have some sort of home theater area with blackout curtains and walls etc to make the effect pop out.

    7) No prolong enjoyment. Millions of people can sit at home and watch TV all day long, but when you bring 3D into it...you get fatigued and your eyes hurt. So while a 3d movie every once in awhile is great, its certainly not something that would be an everyday occurence to the general consumer.

At the end of the day, I just dont see how the cost can justify the small amount of enjoyment it brings to the table. The current HDTVs and blu-rays etc are already amazing quality, so I just dont see people being able to justify jumping through all the hoops on a mainstream scale to bring 3d into the homes.

Keep in mind that if this happens, everyone is going to come out with 3D compatible cables / recievers / players etc....so not only will you need to upgrade your TV...but also all your cables, your recievers, etc etc...

This is nothing more than a marketing strategy since we have hit the limit on the quality and size of TVs that consumers want / need. Everyone needs something else to sell to make money, so they try to convince you that 3D is the next " big thing "

From what I've read, the sentence in bold is not true. Only DLP HDTVs will be at less than 1080p resolution. The rest of the 3D HDTVs will be able to do 1080p. The PS3 will render 3D blu rays in 1080p and drop the resolution to 720p for games, even if you have a 1080p capable HDTV.

That being said, I'm not sure if the 3D phenomenon will last. It definitely has a shot since the major players are pushing it--Samsung, Sony, and Panasonic. At this point, it's just too costly for most people. Sure the price will come down but it's still a big investment (new TV, new blu ray player unless you have a PS3, and the glasses) At this point, it looks like 1.4 HDMI cables is not necessary--most people have the current 1.3)

The active shutter glasses are designed to fit over regular eyeglasses, but for some it's still a deal breaker.

CNET experts answer questions about 3D TV display technology, and 3D LCD and plasma TVs from Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Vizio, and more. Read this blog post by David Katzmaier on Crave.

Note: Some 3DTVs from Sony and Samsung will have 2D to 3D conversion.

DirecTV will have a software update to make current HD boxes 3D compatible but their 3D channels will be at a lower resolution.

HD hasn't even been adopted to the standard yet so flash in the pan. I read something about a study in England and 30% of the people couldn't even see 3D properly. Cutting out a large percentage of your potential customers is never a good idea. Just ask the people that made the last Shadow Run online only.

It will stay, but not in the current version. First there needs to be a standard adopted. Right now there are different ones and not every tv/box can display all the formats. Second the glasses have to go. Until they create 3d tvs without the glasses, it will remain a small piece of the market.

Agreed, it's pretty ridiculous the glasses aren't universal.

Keep in mind that everyone watching the movie will need a pair. B/c of the way it's done it would be unwatchable to somebody without the glasses.

For most families, you're looking at $125-200 x 4 before you even consider the TV and blu ray player

Hope it stays. Especially for animated movies.

If it's filmed in 3D it looks amazing and adds really great depth.

If it's not it will look terrible, movies like Last Airbender were converted over to 3D.

Inception would have been even greater in 3D.

as for the 3D TV, I really want to watch one, but I seriously don't see how this would even work unless you have a 100" screen and be immersed in it. I go to the IMAX to watch movies in 3D because you lost half of the effect when the screen is tiny.

My only concern is the blu ray disc size. For a 3D blu ray, you're putting 2 1080p movies on the same disc as well as the HD audio.

I think I read somewhere that much bigger capacity blu ray discs are about to be released in Japan.

If that's needed, you'd have to assume the price goes up considerably compared to the 2D only version.

I guess I'm one of those that don't see 3D properly. Tried it with both glasses and contacts, and after being convinced to watch movies like Alice and Avatar in 3D and seeing effects no more impressive than 3D from the 80's, I'm not wasting my money again.

It's been documented that some people can't "see" 3D. Wonder if it makes a difference between the passive glasses and the new active shutter glasses. Have you tried watching 3D at a Best Buy?

A lot of interesting posts in here. Does anyone know if there is any way they can make tv's "3D" without a pair of glasses for every person? I imagine it's not possible to simply put a shutter screen over the tv itself rather than on the user's eye's or they would have done that.

I can see all the limitations and agree with them all but like gamecock said the big boys in the industry are all seemly behind it so it may get to the point where it's forced down our throats so to speak.

It can stay for the movie theaters, they need to leave it alone right now for video games. Way too early.

I couldn't see the old 3D movies at all but i can see the new one's like Avatar pretty well. Like others have said it seems to make a huge difference if they film the movie from the beginning to utilize 3D like avatar rather than just try to tack it on at the end like Clash of the Titans.

I don't mind paying a bit more if it's a truly fantastic experience that i couldn't get at home but i hate paying more for a film where it feels like it's just been added on at the end to cash in on the craze.

It's a way for the industry to suck more money out of us and it all depends on the consumer to decide on it's fate. The People hated Midi-Discs, Beta-Max, HD-DVD, Virtual Nintendo, etc and it went away. I think it's too much for the industry to expect people to purchase a new TV after having forced them to upgrade to an HDTV so soon.
