There is no way 3D makes any moves into the mainstream market anytime soon. There are just way too many hurdles to overcome in order to make this happen.
1) Price will have to drop. New technology is always expensive and the prices will eventually drop. During this time frame the 3D technology will get better and cheaper, but not many will jump on the 3D craze now...to fund future ventures.
2)3D on small TVs would not have near the impact as on large ones. So now you need to make it to where a good portion of consumers can somehow afford those large tvs just to get any decent 3D pleasure out of them.
3) Glasses suck and are uncomfortable for many for anything other than very short term viewing. You can notice people lifting their glasses up and trying to refocus their eyes during a regular 3d movie because it hurts their eyes.
4) Cost of glasses. Not to mention you need to drop around 2-3grand on a 3dtv, you also need to buy glasses for your folks in the house...so now in a normal house of 4, you can add an additional 600+ just for glasses to your purchase.
5)Programing. Very few shows will utilize 3d, so the cost wont be justified.
6) Viewing angles. All theaters are set up so you have an optimal viewing angle, just like projecters and the large Tvs.....if you sit anywhere offcenter or have any sort of glare, your viewing satisfaction is greatly diminished. So now people would pretty much need to have some sort of home theater area with blackout curtains and walls etc to make the effect pop out.
7) No prolong enjoyment. Millions of people can sit at home and watch TV all day long, but when you bring 3D into it...you get fatigued and your eyes hurt. So while a 3d movie every once in awhile is great, its certainly not something that would be an everyday occurence to the general consumer.
At the end of the day, I just dont see how the cost can justify the small amount of enjoyment it brings to the table. The current HDTVs and blu-rays etc are already amazing quality, so I just dont see people being able to justify jumping through all the hoops on a mainstream scale to bring 3d into the homes.
Keep in mind that if this happens, everyone is going to come out with 3D compatible cables / recievers / players etc....so not only will you need to upgrade your TV...but also all your cables, your recievers, etc etc...
This is nothing more than a marketing strategy since we have hit the limit on the quality and size of TVs that consumers want / need. Everyone needs something else to sell to make money, so they try to convince you that 3D is the next " big thing "
