The new 3D craze a flash in the pan or here to stay?
Every second movie seems to be coming out in 3D these days and while i can see the positives (it looks cool, may reduce piracy etc) i have to wonder if it's just going to fade in popularity and eventually disappear for the most part.

I agree. The price for 3D movies is insane and Im really hoping it doesnt catch on with TVs and games. For me HD and Blu ray are good enough for me and I dont want to pay the extra price for 3D.MLB: Texas Rangers

Apart from Avatar, what other live action films have actually been filmed in 3D as opposed to just being done in post production? I mean, I think 3D is cool and would be cool in a tacky, corny way for tacky, corny horror movies, but I don't think its necessary for all movies to be in 3D and I really don't have any interest in turning my home theater into a 3D capable one.

Why? All of the 3d movies are released in 2d as well so if you don't want to spend the extra money then you don't have to.
As long as the theaters keep making money off of them then they will keep being made and apparently the movies that were actually filmed in 3d will be coming out soon so there should be higher quality one's out in the near future.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

I have no interest in it, but I don't think it'll go away for the simple fact that it's an extra revenue stream. Theaters want 3D because they can charge more, TV makers want 3D because they can charge more and sell the glasses accessories, TV retailers want 3D so they can sell expensive TVs and accessories, console manufacturers want 3D as a gimmick, etc.Comment

Re: The new 3D craze a flash in the pan or here to stay?
It will fade away just like the other umpteen times it's been in "fashion" the last few decades.
There is basically zero chance of it becoming mainstream in homes because Hidef is already the industry standard and 3D is a noticeable drop in resolution (540 as oppossed to 1080) and colours are muted with 3d transfers. A good 2D hidef picture on your TV is clearly more attractive than the lower resolution 3D picture. Anybody who has seen Avatar on BR can see how much more vibrant and colorful it was with minimal motion blur as opposed to how it looked in 3D.
Technically for 3D to achieve the resolution of a 1080i picture of network TV is still years away and that's not even the biggest problem. The whole infrastructure of cable companies would have to be overhauled to increase the bandwidth to allow a hidef 3D signal to be broadcast at 1080. That's very costly for the service provider who have no reason to do it and is decades away from happening.
People aren't going to invest in new TV's and receivers just so they can go back to a standard definition picture.
It may have a future in video games but even then most games will need to have a barf bag and Advil included with the game because one can only imagine how nauseating and headache inducing it could become playing a 3D game hours on end with all that motion blur.Last edited by Seymour Scagnetti; 07-25-2010, 12:22 PM.Comment

Re: The new 3D craze a flash in the pan or here to stay?
just a passing fad......nothing more. It will never become mainstream due to the fact 3D TV's cost as much as a used car and they only give you 2 3D glasses. When in reality most households have at least 3 or 4 kids in it. And those glasses suppose to be around $300 for 1.
Plus add to the fact you still got a lot of people in the USA rocking SDTV's in their house with a vcr/dvd combo player. They don't even have blu-ray players at all.Comment

I'm not completely buying into it, but the price will come down.
IMO they really have to address the glasses issue, people aren't gonna want to wear the shutter glasses all the time, especially when watching regular tv.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

If companies can figure out how to do 3D on large tvs without the glasses, ala the 3DS, I'd say this fad will be eventually be a fad no more... and become the standard.Comment

Yeah that is a big "IF". The glasses thing is what really going to hamper the sales of 3D TV. Because what about the people who already wear glasses ? That means they going to have glasses over glasses, which will mean huge discomfort level. And then you have those who can't see 3D anyway because of their eyes.Comment

It's gonna become the norm. You just have to bite the bullet and buy into it. The biggest hurdle it will have to encounter is losing the glasses. And may thy spirit live in us, Forever LSU

Really i hope it sort of becomes a norm for big budget movies ONLY at the movie theater though, however it has to be something thought of even in pre-production. A lot of the so called "3-D" movies out now are horrible representations of 3D, Avatar did a awesome job with it because it had every attention of using the technology from the beginning to deliver something unique.
At the current moment, it has literally become a second thought. "Lets film the movie normally and add 3-D elements to it later." If we the people are going to be buying $16 tickets for a 3D movie, it better freaking looking amazing and truly utilize 3D technology to do something great.Last edited by marshallfever; 07-25-2010, 03:49 PM.Comment

Why do you to bite the bullet and buy into, though? The resolution (right now) is a step backwards from HD. Not to mention the whole having to wear glasses while watching restraint. 3D still has some things to work out before it truly has a chance at becoming the norm, but I wouldn't expect it to become a mainstay within the next 20 years.
