Also, I don't see a lot of folks going out and purchasing all new hardware for this particular upgrade.

At least not yet. I think its too soon to be pushing 3D tvs into the market. People are still upgrading to HDTV and blu-ray.

Re: The new 3D craze a flash in the pan or here to stay?

I was pretty much against it at first, but I've been buying into 3D more and more.

I've mentioned it before, but when my wife and I moved into our new house, we quickly realized the 46" DLP in the family room was way too small. It was perfect for the townhouse where we sat 8-9 feet away, but the family room at the new house is 19 feet deep and we sit a good 13-15ft from the TV. She agreed that we'd get a new TV during Xmas (actually it was her idea!). So I'm looking for something in the 60- 65" range....preferably plasma. I dismissed 3D at first, but the more I research, the more interested I am - to the point where I'm quite certain I'll get a 3DTV this Xmas. It might run $3500, but that's within budget so I figure I might as well go for it instead of having buyer's remorse that I did not get it.

I don't see the point in buying a 3DTV right now - other than a handful of movies what is the point?

A couple of the Samsung and Sony (possibly Panasonic) 3DTVs have 2D to 3D conversion. So I could see somebody wanting to watch the Discovery Channel, National Geographic or ESPN in 3D. DirecTV will be rolling out their 3D channels soon.

I went by Best Buy today and I gotta say the Samsung 3DTV display was impressive. The depth on Monsters vs. Aliens was amazing. I wear glasses and the active shutter glasses on top of mine wasn't bad at all.

            That being said, I'm more wowed by a big 2D display. I'd take a 1080p projector and 100" screen over a 40-50" 3DTV.

Because you buy for the future (albeit potential future) and not for right now (ie: big picture). If I'm going to spend 3-5k on a new TV in December, why not get a TV that's excellent HDTV and 3DTV? I won't be purchasing another TV for a while so if 3D does take off, I'd rather get it now than miss the boat. If it doesn't take off, then I still have an excellent HDTV. Sure it costs more than a comparable HDTV without 3D technology, but not that much more to make it matter. If it was 2K more for 3D, then I'd really question whether it was worth it, but for approximately $800 more? No brainer for me.

Also like Gamecock mentioned, 2D to 3D conversion is pretty slick. I saw it at Best Buy on a Samsung that I'm interested in.

Shauk25 - but if the glasses weren't needed, maybe a different story, thus my point. Once they can figure out how to eliminate the glasses it could take off then. With that being said, there's a lot of things people do NOT want to see in 3D, LOL. Ditto for smell-o-vision..

If they eliminated the glasses, then it really could go mass market mainstream.

Of course you can turn off the 3D if you have a bunch of people over. It's still a type of the line tv...3D or 2D.

People said the same thing about blu ray not catching on.

you can also argue that stuff like 1080p, bluray, and surround sound are niche as well. Tons of people don't care about those features, even though they have the wow factor as well. I think 3d can do fine just being a similar niche feature for HDTV's.

I just don't get the 3d hate. It's optional for viewing, and I've actually enjoyed the experience as it's drawn me back into theaters for certain films. Even Nintendo is getting behind autostereoscopic 3d with their popular DS platform, but they're also making it optional to the user.

1080p, blu-ray and surround sound systems are OPTIONAL. None of my relatives or my wife relatives have a blu-ray player or surround sound system. Most of them don't have a 1080p tv either and a little more then half of them still rocking SDTV's.

The thing about 3D is, it don't stop with the tv, you have to buy glasses too. Which makes it very expensive for your average family to have.

Bluray is still not really mainstream. Plus standard DVD format has been around enough to warrant Bluray picking up steam. 3D if ever has a long way to go before everyone at least knows someone that has it in their living room.

Yeah I see more people buying dvds then blu-ray. I only see people buying blu-ray for movies that they ALREADY seen before and like. But when it comes to movies they don't know much about, they get the dvd version of it.

Hell.......I just netflix. 99% of movies I come across I only want to watch once and my wife is the same way..

Depends on what your definition of mainstream is. If you mean, it has to outsell DVDs then no. But if you mean it is sold everywhere and has a decent market share, then yes. A few years ago, finding a blu ray for under $20 was rare. Now you can go in your local Walmart and pick up a wide variety for $10 or less. Sometimes even cheaper than the DVD counterpart.

Agreed, 3D has a long way to go. This version of 3D is only a few months old. Anybody that gets on board now is going to pay a hefty price to be an early adopter of the NEXT BIG THING.

The technology behind it can only get better and the price can only go down. At some point, these two are going to come together to where the average Joe wants a taste (and can afford it).

Like I said, I'd rather have a giant screen (projector) vs. a 3DTV but I'm a fan of technology in general. I don't root for any home theater technology to fail. The more options the better, IMO. If you can afford it, go for it.

Really just depends. I know just as many people that are like me...if given the option, I choose blu ray over DVD 100% of the time. I'd never blind buy on a DVD unless it's not released on blu ray (or HD-DVD).

Some people don't care and just want to see the movie. 480p (DVD), 720p or 1080p doesn't matter. I guess that's why bootleggers are still in business.
