I don't know about "worst ever" but it has to be pretty close. All the remakes, sequels, 3D and animated movies are just getting tired.

Re: Is 2010 the worst movie year ever?

after viewing "Dinner for Schmucks" last night I can't put up any argument to defend this year.

a lot of mediocrity and duds this year-and mediocrity ain't worth watching either especially at $10 PLUS.

I'm still looking forward to "The Other Guys".

I know some of you don't get too excited over reviews, but Rotten Tomatoes has been a pretty good barometer for what's good and bad. I liked Date Night and it's 68 rating gives me a minimum threshold of 60 in the future (maybe).

I'm looking forward to The Other Guys as well. You'd think that you couldn't go wrong with Will Ferrell and Samuel L.Jackson. But I've got a feeling they'll manage to screw it up.Comment

People forget movies are entertainment. This year has been far from the worst ever. There's a reason I don't go to the WSJ for for entertainment advice.Comment

Kick-***, Inception, and Toy Story 3 are all that I can remember seeing this year off the top of my head.

Re: Is 2010 the worst movie year ever?

This guy sounds like he should be posting on here. Sequels and remakes are nothing new but of course, it's always cool to proclaim the current year/decade/century to be the "worst ever".Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: Is 2010 the worst movie year ever?

let me start off by saying I haven't been impressed by the overall quality of movies this year. Of course, i'm not impressed most years... the simple fact of the matter is the bad movies will always outweigh the good ones.

regardless though, jmood is right on... even if the author was correct, and 2010 was the worst year in the history of movies (for the record, a ridiculous point to try and make), the argument loses all credibility because of the way the author goes about trying to "prove" his point.

in fact, I literally just read a review of a movie written in 2003, in which the reviewer complained that Hollywood made nothing original anymore and all they made were remakes and sequels. And I followed that up by reading an article that tried to claim 2008 was the worst year of movies ever...

all you have to do is read one sentence of this "article" to see that the writer is blatantly pushing an agenda and distorting information to support his argument

I mean, his very first argument is, "Where once there was "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," there is now "Robin Hood," prince of duds."... that sounds all well and good, except of the fact that Prince of Thieves wasn't even a good movie! Surely thats an important point, right?

He then goes on to complain that there is no more originality in Hollywood, and every movie has the same basic plot. While at the same time complaining that there is no "Arnold Schwarzenegger", "Sylvester Stallone", "Jet Li", etc, of this generation... oh the hypocrisy is strong w/ this one.

heck, one of the best/most popular/highly reviewed movies of the year, Inception, is merely used as a "plot device" to push the article along. While not actually being acknowledged for what it is... one of the better/more original/entertaining "blockbusters" in recent years

the entire "article" reads like an outline, in which you take the worst movies for said year and act like they are the barometer for that year. While simultaneously comparing them to the best movies of past years (or in fact, all time)

You could take that same formula and pick any year in the history of movies, and make it sound like ****. (in fact, I bet you could literally keep 90% of this article exactly the same and simply change a few words/sentences and create an argument for any other year being the worst ever)

of course, thats what happens when its more lucrative to make the news rather than report it... its the reason why a guy like Armond White continues to be employed (or dare I say, the reason why he goes against the grain in the first place *feigned shock!*)... its the reason why this thread was posted here, and we all went to read that "article" in the first place... because the truth's boring and controversy's interesting, and the more people you have talking about you, the more you have reading your article and clicking on your website, and the more money you're making... Yeah he could have come out and said "2010 hasn't been great for movies, but we could say that about just about every year". But then we wouldn't have read it and be talking about it now...

of course, thats an entirely different discussion (and one that would probably end in a locked thread a numerous bans lol)Comment

Re: Is 2010 the worst movie year ever?

I mean honestly... in truly ingenious fashion, the author even manages to turn the fact that Toy Story 3 was such a good movie (99% on rotten tomatoes, 100% w/ top critics, 9.0 on IMDB... good enough for #10 all-time) into a negative... "2010 couldn't even produce an original movie that was better than some stupid sequel"

i'm paraphrasing of course, but that's basically what he saidComment

Re: Is 2010 the worst movie year ever?

The world is always crashing when it comes to the movie industry.

I'm not a fan of remakes or big action movies with no plot, but they make money and people watch them.

I'll be one of the first here to complain that the art of story telling is dying in favor of entertainment, but I will never say that the business of movie making is dying. Money comes first for these things and Hollywood couldn't be bigger at the moment.

And I felt that 2010 has actually been pretty good about making big action movies and remakes with either a plot or a good enough deviance from the original idea. That's to be commended.

Rather than looking at the product for what it is marketed to do, reviewers should be looking at what they have done."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
