Re: Is 2010 the worst movie year ever?

 Yes, absolutely.

I'm not the only one who thinks so:

Not that imdb is the know-all of movie ratings (and Inception will inevitably slide down the list), but it is one of the greatest 50 or 100 films ever made. Toy Story 3 is just outside that list of 100, imo.

Kick-A**, Toy Story 3, Inception, Shutter Island are all good movies. That's about one every two months, which isn't THAT bad. A movie has to be really good for me to see it in theaters anyway.

Here's some of my favorite movies of 2009 and when they were released:
 After August
Up In The Air - December
 Avatar - December
 Inglorious Basterds - August 21
 District 9 - August 14
 A Serious Man - October 9
 Crazy Heart - Late December
 (500) Days of Summer - August 7
 Zombieland - October 2
 *Precious - November 20
 *An Education - October 8
*The Messenger - November 13 (limited)
*The Fantastic Mr. Fox - November 25
 *Invictus - December
*The Princess and the Frog - December
 *Nine - December

 Before August
I Love You, Man - March
 Up - May 29
The Hurt Locker - Limited release in late June
 The Hangover - June
 *Star Trek - May 8
 *Coraline - February
 *Harry Potter - July

 * = Never saw the movie

As you can see, 2009 put out a lot of very solid movies after August. A lot of these movies put out after August I didn't even see in theaters because they were limited releases or unknown until Oscar time.

Looking at that makeshift list I assembled, I'd rather have 2010's January to July than 2009's January to July.

I'd also take Inception over all of 2009's movies.Comment

I can't believe people are using Hot Tub Time Machine in support of this being a decent year for movies. That surprises every bit of Hell out of me.PS: You guys are great.

I don't get that either, but some of my friends LOVED that movie

Comedies are enjoyable but I don't really classify them as good movies. It's like comparing graffiti to art in a museum.Comment

Umm...what? I think a good comedy is a lot harder to pull off than a good drama.

Re: Is 2010 the worst movie year ever?

Comedies are extremely subjective, though. Moreso than most critically renowned movies. I think Borat is hilarious, and The Hangover is really funny... but how do you compare them to Inception or The Hurt Locker or There Will Be Blood? I thought Dude, Where's My Car was hilarious, but don't consider it a great movie.

I'd rather go on YouTube and find funny clips for two hours than go to a movie and watch a comedy that is probably trash, like you were saying it's hard to make a good comedy.

I can't say that about watching a drama, though. Comedy is just a different beast for me. Original, creative content like stand-ups, shorts, and TV series appeal to me more than two-hour long, drawn-out, weak story-line, bad dialog comedies which are 97% of comedies that Hollywood produces.Comment

Re: Is 2010 the worst movie year ever?

If a comedy is good at what it does or is trying to do, I consider it a good movie, which is essentially the same basis I have for any movie.

I consider comedies such as Young Frankenstein, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Shaun of the Dead, Spinal Tap, and O Brother Where Art Thou? as not only some of the greatest comedies made, but some of the greatest films made and rank right up there (all I consider better even) with Inception and There Will Be Blood.

 All movies are subjective.

Re: Is 2010 the worst movie year ever?

I'm just of the opinion that so few good comedies are made, and some of the best comedy is stuff you find in short bunches over all types of mediums. Like I said earlier, I'd rather listen to stand-ups, watch shorts on the internet, watch Curb Your Enthusiasm or similar TV than see most comedy movies. That's where I seem to find the most variety, originality and funny material. It also doesn't fake having a story line, some stupid romance or a redeeming moral value that so many comedies try to throw in to appease the masses. If a comedy is good at what it does or is trying to do, I consider it a good movie, which is essentially the same basis I have for any movie.

If I want to see something serious but entertaining, I will watch a dramatic film. Something that's made with the intention of doing something great rather than just pull in money.

Comedies and dramas are just two different beasts.

All of the movies you mentioned are great, btw and I would consider all of them good movies. But a truly good comedy is made every 3-5 years, that's why I don't even try to classify them with other movies. Graffiti and museum art.Comment

Re: Is 2010 the worst movie year ever?

Big fan of dramas, but I'm way way more likely to re-watch a good comedy.

Most good dramas, I'll be wowed but rarely if ever watch it again.

Can't get enough of the original 12 Angry Men though. Love that movie.Comment
