Don't call this cd metal, lol. It's an amazing cd, but very produced.

This cd is not representative of where metal stands. a7x is a VERY popular band.

I don't see any reason not to call it metal. Musically it fits the definition, and A7X came up playing the same bands I played with: Lamb of God, God Forbid, Killswitch Engage, Poison the Well, At the Gates, Zao etc. They are influenced by a lot of the same bands as us: Meshuggah, In Flames, Soilwork, GnR, Metallica, etc. There is nothing about them that is NOT metal. Double bass, guitar solos, heavy chug guitars, pedal-note riffs etc.

They fit the bill and their success is built very much off of the rise of metalcore. I can play this band back to back with Evergrey, Killswitch, Soilwork, Scar Symmetry, God Forbid and Shadows Falls and many people wouldn't even be able to pick them out aside from the singer. Hell, this album is more Metal than anything Metallic has done since AJFA, and the Black Album is very much considered metal.

And I'm not sure what "very produced" means. Metal has a history of hundreds of bands that are very, very "produced".

Ok.. Maybe not metal was a bit extreme. But if you listen to them, and say, Seether, who aren't metal. The only difference in the sound is the amount of notes. Metal is generally a lot heavier than this album. Then again, hair metal is still metal, so oh well. And GNR was never metal, they are blues rock if anything.

This album just sounds like a mroe technical radio-rock album. Don't get me wrong, Seether is my favorite band, so I wasn't bashing them. I love this album, but metal as a whole is in **** standing in this country. They sold so many albums because of the band name, not the genre.

I didn't say GnR was metal, I said they were an influence on metal bands, and they are. There was a time where they were touring with Metallica and I think Ozzy. Put that with Slash's soloing style, and you can easily see that while GnR isn't metal themselves, they are a part of the metal family tree much like Hendrix.

I don't really buy the "metal as a whole" argument, because that's easy to skew either way. Metal is a very big and versatile genre. Since about 98, there is a section of metal that has been on the rise. A7X comes from that section. For quite some time now we've been seeing bands like Shadows Fall, Killswitch, Lamb of God and Mastadon all over video games and films. A7X is an extension of this. Many of these bands can sell out a very decent sized show/concert.

I consider A7X generally more "heavy" than most power metal, and no one is trying to take away Hammerfall's metal license. A7X is a metal band that takes extended detours into rock, but at their core they are a metal band. Riffs-speed-double bass-the occasional blast beat-regular occurrence of fast guitar solos. They even have some tapping and sweeps going on in there. Like I said, there is very little they do that is not metal or a very near cousin of metal. I'd kick out Motley Crue, Alice Cooper and Ratt before I even considered excommunicating A7X from the metal fraternity.

If glam bands were considered metal I don't see why A7X should be excluded. WINGER was considered metal! lol

Been listening to the songs posted here and as always, the band is pretty awesome from a technical standpoint, just not sure if I really like the sound direction. Maybe if I can get a hold of this for free on the down-low and give it some real listens I'd be willing to buy the album.

              Re: Avenged Sevenfold's Nightmare

I've been enjoying this album so far, but then again, they are probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite band out there.

Fiction and Natural Born Killer are my initial favorites. And I forget which one it is, but one of the songs sounds VERY Metallica-esque. The first listen through I thought my music had switched over.

Never been a really big fan of this band as I've always looked at them as a "mall-metal" or "trendcore" band if you will. And yes, I have given them a fair listen on several occasions and I just can't get into it. I don't think they suck or anything like that, it's just not for me.

Love their new album, it ain't the same with The Rev passing away though, you can't replace him.

Crazy talk. They already have a better drummer in the band and it's not even close.

Yes, but Mike was just filling in to finish the cd. They'll have a different drummer for their next album.

That said, I'm not a big fan of the new cd. I don't like the mixing of styles, they don't go well together in my opinion. If not for Save Me, which is indeed the best track on the disc, I would have fallen asleep the last part of the disc. Staind fell into this same formula(part heavy part sap) and I haven't liked them since Breaking The Cycle, which was a step back from Dysfunction. Avenged have only gone backwards since City Of Evil which is my favorite mistake by them. I say mistake because it was the cd that sent them mainstream, which is when most music groups become what the label wants them to be rather than who they really are.

Agreed. There are many places on the album where Mike is doing his thing and really elevates the work.

I've been an a7x fan for awhile now, and I can say that this is their best work since waking the fallen, IMO.
Keanu Reeves: I shall take Balloons for $800, if you please.

Alex Trebek: That's not a category.

Keanu Reeves: My mistake. I shall choose Balloons for $600.
