    Re: DIRECTV or Dish?

We (my family) has had Dish for years. We were Prime Star customers and then Dish bought the company and we decided to stick it out. We've been with Dish for about 10 years now and have never had customer service reception problems. We recently picked up the HD package and I'm not the least bit disappointed.

DTV doesn't try to rip you. Things are in the contract to protect them, most people don't read it and complain after they agreed to it without reading it.

The $100 is clearly stated that it comes off your bill for $10 a month. That person also has to call the correct phone # or sign-up using the correct website. It is all clearly on the DTV website and in all their mailings.

DTV also doesn't increase their costs as much as cable does without adding something. I wasn't happen when I had to start paying $3 for MRV, but I guess at least I had it free for about 1 year.

DTV will be following Dish in terms of dropping the surcharge for HD channels. Not sure when that goes into effect.

Q: For anybody that has switched between the satellite companies...do they take the old satellite down? take out the existing wiring?

Gamecock - yes they'd change satellites as they are not the same equipment.

                What do you mean?

Also, from the packages I've seen Dish DOES NOT have MLB Network which is a huge bummer. I looked at all the prices I was quoted so with Time Warner Cable it would $150 (TV/Phone/Internet), DirecTV it would be $140 and w/Dish it would be $120. I almost had it set-up where it would be $90 with DirecTV for everything but again they wouldn't acknowledge Windstream as an ISP in their bundle deal so the price skyrocketed.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

I had both and didn't like either one. Comcast for me.

Wow, I find that pretty baffling. I had Comcast and it was awful. Their equipment was archaic with tons of lag. I couldn't wait to get rid of it and get Verizon FIOS when I lived in VA.

                        I agree

Only thing dish doesnt have all day is PBS Kids, the NFL Ticket package (which you pay for) and probably a bunch of locals you wont see anyway

That more HD channels thing is hogwash

That said I've had both and you cant go wrong with either.

It's not hogwash that DirecTV has more HD channels than Dish from what I've read. DirecTV has 166 channels that are HD and Dish has 122. I know it's DirecTV's site but look at this listing to see the comparison:

The only way Dish can compete with DirecTV in the number of HD channels department is if they count their PPV channels.

                            Re: DIRECTV or Dish?

Here's some more reasons someone posted who has had both systems on why they'd recommend DirecTV over Dish TV. #1 and #3 would seal the deal for me in why I'd never get Dish.

                            1. DirecTV uses only one roof satellite receiver for local channels. Dish, in areas, requires two dish satellite receivers on the roof to receive local channels. I tried for years, purchasing three TV antennae, to get reliable local TV reception; to no avail. I could not get the Dish second roof top receiver because of my neighbor’s trees.

                            2. DirecTV includes local channels in their price. You pay extra with Dish.

                            3. DirecTV HD DVR will record two HD channels at once. Dish records two channels at once, but only one is HD.

                            4. DirecTV receiver stays on if you leave it on. If the Dish receiver is left on, the picture is replaced in the middle of the night with an annoying Dish logo on the screen. So, if you want to record a Dish recorded program to your VCR or DVD during that period, your program is replaced with the Dish logo.

                            5. DirecTV has at least two weeks of programming information on their system. Dish programming is limited to one week.

                            6. DirecTV DVR has output options for HDMI, component and two analog AV outputs that operate simultaneously. Dish has HDMI, component and one analog.

I recently got Comcast when I moved to Illinois and I'm not liking it so far. It takes too long to switch between channels, and takes too long for the cable to turn on. My bill is really cheap right now so I will deal with it but I will most likely switch in a few months.

Yeah that was the issue I had with it mostly too.....the lag. The menus and overall interface looked terrible too but maybe they've updated that since then. That lag nonsense used to drive me INSANE though..
