In its' history or recently? The book "Live from New York" covers a few instances where the show was on the brink of cancellation. I haven't heard anything recently though.

At this point, I think the seniority of the show trumps all else. I don't know that it will be cancelled until Lorne Michaels decides to kill it, or it loses pop culture relevance on its' own - and judging by the hosts it attracts, cameo appearances, and mainstream comedic actors and actresses the show churns out, it still holds some level of importance.

As for the Jennifer Lawrence episode...eh, not great. I liked the diner sketch and Anthony Crispino with the second-hand news on WU; but that's all I remember off the top of my head.

Just caught the Adam Levine episode this morning. For the most part I thought it was pretty funny. Loved the gay talk show skit.

      "We have two children together"
"Well what are your babies names, Van **** and goatee because those babies are beards!"

And I loved the Sopranos Diaries. Pauly Walnuts had grey hair in high school. There was a pole dancer in the lunch room.

I was also glad to see more Nasim Pedrad!!!!

Agreed. Levine ep was a step up and funny. Found it enjoyable overall.

Just bumping this as a reminder - back new tonight with Bieber. I'm in "let's see if he's funny" mode. Thought he was funny when he cameo'ed in a Tina Fey sketch a couple years ago, but he didn't have to do much there.

          He's watching you!

            Re: Saturday Night Live

Here's where I sit on this:

Can Justin Bieber do what Justin Timberlake did to me?

I've always liked Timberlake's music, but I did not respect his attempt to be an actor until he showed us he doesn't take himself too seriously. I respected that about him.

I don't like Bieber's music, but I'm still in that wait-and-see approach with his personality. Can he show me that he's willing to be more than just a music personality?

For example: Bruno Mars did well to show me he can have fun and doesn't take his being a music superstar too seriously.

I don't get that vibe from Bieber. It could be unfair, but I don't follow him enough to notice if he can hang with the down-to-earth people of this planet.

That actually summed it up better than I could - and to that end, I don't think he'll prove to be as open as someone like Timberlake or Bruno Mars. I think it's purely an age thing right now. Beiber, because of his stardom, has been in a bubble for most of his life. That lack of life experience might hurt him in an environment like SNL. He might not have the personality to adapt to sketches.

I have no doubt he'll go out there and have some fun, but I don't see him going as "in" on a scene as much as others would.

I'd love to be proven wrong though. Never rooting for anyone to bomb on SNL.

Didn't even consider age. Bieber is only 18? Goodness. Mars is 27 and JT was 22 when he made his first appearance on SNL (Wow, can't believe that was ten years ago).

I guess Bieber could be different in four years. Or again, I could be unfairly labeling him. I do think he's presented himself well when appearing on Late Show interviews.

                We will see.

Also, chances tonight that Fallon shows up to do a Bieber skit? Crossing fingers.

I will say this - I think the show got better as it went on. Bieber himself was better than I thought he'd be, but I won't be clamoring for his return any time soon.

"The Californians" is such an odd sketch. I think at this point it's just all about Fred and Bill trying to make each other break character?

Yeah, I personally hate whenever they do The Californians. I never find it funny, at all. I liked the opening sketch, but after that, felt it was kind of weak overall.

                      Re: Saturday Night Live

It's weird, because if they didn't break (to varying degrees) during the sketch, "The Californians" would just be a sketch that would only be funny if you had a basic knowledge of the roads in CA. Even if it bombs with at-home viewers, it might still go over with the live crowd...but they're playing this in front of a NY crowd.

I laugh when they break because it's nice to see every once in a while, but I dislike that they seem to run this only for Fred to break Bill with some variation on "Huuuu...what are yoouuu doing herrree?"

Also, if Bieber hosting means more Nasim Pedrad (as she was on a lot last night), they can drag that little guy out every week.

"The Californians" is a "12:45 Skit" at best...

When I saw that it was the first main skit after a drab opening (and monologue), I figured it was going to be a weak night...and it most certainly was...

                        I bailed after "Weekend Update"...

Jury still out on Bieber...he's prob not a JT, but if he does have acting / comedy chops, the writers didn't help with a noticeably inferior effort...

I thought he did a pretty good considering his age. Always love the Californians skits. I LOL'd at the part during the Grease skit when Bieber says, "You know I'm eleven right?"

Best skits were the Justin doubles (just because they mocked him) and "Glice". The Californians are never funny IMO

The "Glice" one was dumb at first but then it got funny when Biebs started laughing. And Taran Killam played up on that and tried to get him to laugh even more.

They don't order sketches by strength any more. I don't remember the exact reason now, but in theory the first sketch after the monologue has a chance of being the weakest of the night.
