It seemed like the crowd didn't know Olivia Wilde was in the digital short. I thought it was a decent episode.

I have high hopes for the Fallon episode.

We finally had an Obama sketch last night. At this point I don't even think Armisen is trying.

The Sex Ed sketch had me in stitches. This is my favorite new "recurring" sketch.

I didn't even watch the cold open. I just snoozed right through it.

Maybe I'm wrong, but doesn't it seem as if SNL isn't really using their hosts the way they used to?

I seem to remember hosts dominating the sketches. Usually being the main character or the one that drove the story for the main character. Now it seems they are just extras in a sketch for the main cast.

With the exception of that last Christmas skit (hanging of ornaments), I can hardly remember Steve doing anything of significance. But how could he when he isn't headlining the skits. He's just there. And it's been this way for many other hosts.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Yeah it seems like this season the host is just basically an extra in the sketches. Perhaps the writers/producers think the current cast is so talented they don't need the host to do much.

The only funny part of the episode for me was Drunk Uncle on Weekend Update. Bobby killed it.

He steals Weekend Update every time he's on, IMO. Drunk Uncle was hilarious.

These Obama cold opens are all just going through the motions. There's actually a decent article from the New York Times about Armisen's Obama character: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/05/ar...veys-bush.html

I thought the episode was pretty good, to be honest. A couple issues but overall I laughed consistently. Buscemi was pushed to the background, but when he was front-and-center he was great. Erotic Chef was hilarious, and I've been waiting for Sex Ed to return. I thought the pedophile sketch was great too.

Could've done without another Whitney Houston retread, and Kristen Wiig's character that loves surprises was again just "meh". I thought it was funny the first time, and I only remember that because I knew the next time they'd run with it, they would just have her start crazy and then get insane crazy instead of slowing it a little.

              Oh well...Katy Perry up next!

Like it was suggested in this thread, I think a "ghetto" Obama would be funny. I think a Obama/Bush sketch where they argue with each other over who did a worse job being the US President would be funny (they could one up each other with their mistakes). I know SNL is made up of left leaning people but it seems like they are afraid to criticize/make fun out of him.

Yeah, but as we've all said before (and the article I linked may also reference), Obama doesn't have a comedic quirk they can exploit, so they're left to make it funny through the writing. We've seen how that's gone. It's just a bad combo of subject matter, weak writing, and an actor who doesn't seem to want to do too much with it. I almost think even with the exact same writing, Jay Pharoah could make something out of this because his Obama impression just has some swagger to it and it would bring some energy to the sketch.

I continue to vote for a new SNL President!

                    Where is this?

I can't believe we haven't seen Obama and Bush arguing!

Why isn't there a skit pitting the two against each other?

Honestly, I think the five or six of us that are active in this thread could collectively come up with a few sketches that SNL should write.

Well, at this point it would just be out of place. They totally should've done it two years ago, or even something around when Bush was promoting his book.

We probably could. Don't know if that says more about us or the current writing.

                        Re: Saturday Night Live

So, Katy Perry was as expected. Nothing terrible, but I'd be hard-pressed to think of anything as the "highlight". I did like the "New Year's Eve" movie parody, but I'm a sucker for those impression-heavy bits.

I'm actually excited for next week with Fallon. I didn't really care for him as a cast member, but I really like him as a talk show host. I've totally flipped my opinion of him. Michael Buble was good in that Hamm and Buble sketch last time he was on, so I'd like to hope they utilize him again.

Edit: I did like that Kristen Wiig Finnish character, Kalle. Stefon was good, but they are really riding him hard this season. The last sketch with Katy Perry and Moynihan was decent too, I thought. The ending of it seemed flat, but it actually built as it went along instead of totally playing the same joke for five minutes.

Stefon continues to crack me up. Has there even been a What Up With Dat sketch this season?

I'm going to be disappointed if Timberlake doesn't show up this week to do a Barry Gibbs talk show sketch with Fallon.

Oh yeah I hope to hear a new song within the Digital Short.

I wonder if Sanz will comeback to have a gigglefest with Fallon. I have high hopes for this episode.
