That's high praise. The one with Nick Cage was definitely my favorite one.

Yeah, had some friends over playing some board games and we turned on SNL. After that segment I paused it and went to Hulu to show them Cage + Cage, it's funny every time.

And the piano guy (I posted vid above). Can't be too surprised though; I think they only used his Trebek on his previous two hosting gigs.

Huge waste of opportunity. What I don't understand is why the writers don't use old nostalgic characters to introduce new ones.
How so? Legit q. Can't think of any Will Ferrell characters that they could've done to help introduce new characters. (Unless you mean just using Will Ferrell the man as the nostalgic character, then I see what you mean.)

Also how in the bleeping heck do you use the W character and do everything to avoid having him speak to Obama. Really?!
Agreed, though I really thought they'd go with Bush giving Romney advice. I like what they did with him and Biden though. Minor flaw - they had Bush refer to Cheney as both VP and President. Both played for a joke, but little logic flaws like that bother me some times.

          Re: Saturday Night Live

Ah, Hulu cut the Ana Gasteyer guest appearance. I saw her at the end and thought something must have been cut, but I'll watch that skit now.

I also understand they can't bring back every character since a lot of them have former castmates alongside them. Cheri Oteri for the Spartan cheerleaders being one.

But, what I liked about the best episodes is that new characters are created using the hosts. Think about Justin Timberlake's first show. SNL helped create 3-4 new characters from JT. When he comes on, you might get all 4, you might get just two. Sometimes he'll make a guest appearance as one (like last night with Samberg in the 100th Digital Short).

If Ferrell can't show up with Oteri or Gasteyer or whoever (understandably) then why don't the writers find ways to create new characters with the people that will be around for a while. This way whenever he does come back to host, he can reintroduce that character or even make a surprise appearance every now and then.

This is the problem I have with the direction of SNL, especially this season. Their use of hosts is lackluster. The hosts are back up characters. When Will Ferrell is mostly forgettable in an entire episode of SNL, there's no one else you can point your finger at then the writers. They have no clue.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I guess Abby Elliot was replaced on that Fox sitcom so she might be back after all.

Finally got around to watching last weeks episode. I must say overall it was a very poor episode. Will Ferrell wasn't to blame it was the crappy skits. Like CMH said, Ferrell was used mainly as a back up character throughout. They should get Will Forte back, he was the best part of the night for me.

I just watched it too. I thought it started out pretty decent but every after the news was absolutely horrible. Sucks the only character they brought back for Will was that crappy old singing couple. Always though they were annoying and I never cared much for Ana Gasteyer in general.

I agree that it went downhill after Weekend Update, but I'm a fan of the singing couple.

                    Re: Saturday Night Live

I didn't think the Digital Short was really funny but it was great to see all the guest stars.

I believe Ferrell was sick so that's why he didn't have a major role on the show.

With 2 or 3 of the veteran cast members probably being on their last show, I expect to see a lot recurring characters. As much as I hate a lot of Wiig's characters, I can admit she's one of the most talented cast members in SNL history. People that bash her now will be saying how much they loved her on SNL 3 years from now.

Definitely talented - they've just relied on her SO much that I think it killed some of her effectiveness.

I love Kristen Wiig. I hope we see one more Penelope, the deformed girl on The Lawrence Welk Show or where she knocks on the house of the Sweepstakes Winner. Those are great.

Very cool of them to do. Awesome show overall too.

Digital Short pretty much confirms Samberg's exit. Confused about Sudeikis...he definitely looked like he was emotional at the end, but he got no screen time and wasn't front and center with Kristen and Andy at the end. Maybe saving his official goodbye for after he's done playing Romney?

That's the conclusion I reached. Sudeikis has been there just as long I think, so it would be classless not to give him some kind of send-off as well.
