Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
Your consoles, blu ray player, cable/satellite box.
Depends on if your console or device came with one. The new 360's don't come with HD capable cables. I know DirecTV HD boxes come with one. So it depends on what you have.
The picture doesn't just become HD because you have an HDTV.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
$400 for just a 32" ? Seems pricey.
EDIT: Upon further review, that looks like the going price. Guess there are just better deals at 42" and up.
----------------------------------------------------
Like others have said, HDMI cables are way to go for full enjoyment of HD picture and sound.
In an ideal situation, you'd have "X + 1" number of HDMI cables.
X= Number of HDMI devices being used (plugged into a receiver) + 1 going from receiver to HDTV
OR just 1 HDMI cable for every device plugged directly into the HDTV.Last edited by GAMEC0CK2002; 02-26-2012, 05:45 PM.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
well if I didn't say I had dumb questions earlier then please consider the following: I have a lot of dumb questions.
I don't have a cable box in my room so I don't know if I can get HD or not. I'm not paying the extra to get a box in my room, I only ever watch ESPN anyway. Would a cable still be worth it?
I have HD hookups for both my 360 and PS3 so no concerns there.Lux y VeritasComment

What you can do is find an old one, or go buy one for $10. An antenna. Good old rabbit ears will get you full HD over the air, local channels only of course(abc, fox, cbs, CW, ect).
Is this what you have going from your Ps3 and 360?
Spoiler
HDMI
or
xbox 360 component, it can also use HDMI. If you have this one make sure you switched it to HDTV on the plug where it goes into the 360.

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
As far as HD through your provider, you can't get it to the TV without a box. So no, you don't need an additional HDMI cable. Is it worth it? Depends on who your provider is and how much it cost. It's worth it for me because it's cheap and I watch a lot of TNT. You can watch ESPN through the xbox 360 so it may not be worth it for you.

I think I'll try life without a box, done it for a while now. The only TV I'll be watching on this is sportscenter when I'm going to bed. Anytime I want to sit down and watch something I usually just watch it downstairs.Lux y VeritasComment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
I am glad I found this thread.
I currently have a 32-inch Sharp Aquos that is about four years old. It's a nice enough TV, but it's way past time for an upgrade.
My knowledge on TV's is as elementary as you can get. I've spent the past few days scourging stores and came very close to pulling the trigger on a Samsung 46-inch, but found out at the last minute that they were out of them. I'm glad it worked out that way. About that - what's the deal with stores like Walmart being completely out of stock on almost all of their display TV's? I live in an area of about 200,000 people and all three of the Walmart's had nothing for TV's. Weird.
I've been told by family and friends to stay away from Plasma's, but this thread makes them look like they might not know what they're talking about. So now, I'm open to either a Plasma or LCD.
I have some parameters, though.
- Maximum price is around $750; but I'd like to go lower if possible.
- Minimum size is 46-inch. 46-55 is what I want.
- My basic understanding of TV's is laughable so I'm going to need a lot of help from you guys.
- Plasma or LCD... I'm open to either.
I watch sports and play video games. Throw in watching a movie with the wife once a week or so. I realize my price range might make it difficult to get a 55, but a 46-50 would do just fine.
NDAlum, I feel like I'm in the same boat that you were in a while back in this thread... Trying to find the right TV on a budget feels like taking on a second job.
One other thing... I plan on hanging this soon-to-be-acquired TV on my wall, but I have to corner it. Will that be difficult? I can take a picture of the area if need be. I am assuming I am going to need to buy a pretty sturdy wall mount for that. My wife doesn't want to put an entertainment center beneath the TV because that's where she wants to move my 2-year-old's toys to, so I am going to have to find something to store my PS3, 360 and cable box on...
I'm a rookie and need help, guys. Thanks in advance...Last edited by 12; 03-09-2012, 07:33 AM.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
They don't know what they are talking about. There is no reason to stay away from Plasma. I was going to find you a plasma because they are usually cheaper as you go bigger, but I found this one.
Spoiler
Same TV in both. $650 on Amazon, no tax, no shipping. Looks to be an amazing deal. I bought my TV from Amazon. They use a special shipping service for TVs. Guy came in, unboxed me then plugged it in to make sure it worked. So I wouldn't worry about that.
As for a bracket. Monoprice.com is the best place to get them - http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...#specification
Someone will have to confirm that style though. I have a single arm one that gives me full range of motion and could easily do what you are talking about in the corner. Not 100% sure how these dual arm ones work. This bracket is for the 47".
and while you are on monoprice, HDMI cables - http://monoprice.com/products/subdep...02&cp_id=10240
I like Plasma though - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/LG+-+50&...8YGObMq18EQBj2
$100 more, but 3" bigger.
This wall mount would definitely let you get it into a corner - http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2
It won't work on that other TV though.Last edited by SuperBowlNachos; 03-09-2012, 11:42 AM.Comment

So you're saying that with the LG, I won't be able to corner it with a wall mount... Or am I misunderstanding that?Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
I'm not sure how that technology of mount works with two arms. The second mount might work for the first TV. I didn't look to hard at it, it just didn't come up on the first search I ran.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
Well, my son just woke up from his nap and I'm about to load him up and we're going to go hit some stores to see what's out there. I am getting very impatient. I know taking my time is important, but guys, I've been wanting a bigger, nicer TV for 2+ years now.
Tomorrow, I should have some help with getting it up on the wall. My wife's dad will be coming over and her cousin might be stopping by as well. I am not a handy person at all and will need some help. So I feel like time is of the essence. I won't make a rush decision, but I am really hoping that I find my TV today!
That LG on Amazon looks really nice... My only fear is that I am reading a lot of reports in The Show forum that the LCD's suffer from input lag. If I can find a cheaper Plasma, I might pull the trigger on that. It makes it tough because with a second baby on the way and more medical expenses with this pregnancy, I am definitely on a set budget and can't spend more than $750-800 tops. So, I may not get exactly what I want, but I feel like I'll have enough options at that price to where I can make a good decision.
I'll report back when I get home...Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
Well if you are tight on a budget it sounds like you need to accept tomorrow won't happen.
Here is the mount that Best Buy suggest for those LGs - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/SANUS+-+...&skuId=9836248
You'll also pay a $8-$10 more for an HDMI cable.
The LCD has a 2.4 ms response time which is pretty low so I don't think there will be much concern about lag. I am a plasma person, but for $650 and no tax that really does look like a good deal.Last edited by SuperBowlNachos; 03-10-2012, 01:12 AM.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
Yep, I didn't get a TV tonight.
Best Buy had a 55-inch Sony LCD (120mz, 1080p) for $1,199. It looked beautiful. I wanted to pull the trigger, but then remembered the budget. I am glad I held back because I can afford it, but I am not sure how well a 55 would fit. I am being extremely good in trying to keep my budget down so I need to keep that mentality. If it doesn't happen for a week or two, then I'll just have to tough it out. I've survived this long.
I also looked at a couple Samsung Plasma's, but they were only 720p. The price was right, but everything else wasn't.
I am really thinking hard about that LG, ollie. That just might be my best option. I am making a Costco run tomorrow, so if I don't see anything that floors me, I will probably order that LG. It's everything that I want and I won't beat the price.
I was told by an associate at Best Buy that I would have to pay $250 for a mount. I am not sure if he knows what he's talking about and he could have just been trying to sucker me. But he said considering I want to corner it, I will have to get an expensive wall mount. $250 seems pretty damn steep, though.
Here's a picture of where I'll be putting the TV. It's our secondary living room that has most of my son's toys. The picture is self-explanatory and shows you where I want to put the TV. Let me know what you think, please...Attached FilesComment
