Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

For the money DLP is STILL the best picture hands down. AVSforum has a great breakdown on this.

Does anyone other than Mitsubishi even make DLP sets anymore?

Big screen plasmas have dropped so much in price over the last few years that there is no demand for DLP.

This. Mitsy is the last DLP manufacturer worth mentioning. Right now, "thin is in". DLPs have a much bigger room footprint AND you need to be sitting directly in front to have a good picture.

Affordable 1080p Projectors (DLP and 3LCD) have also hit the scene. Why go 80" when you can go 100" - 120" with the same amount of money?

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

I was never a fan of Plasma televisions until recently. My sister's boyfriend recently got a Samsung 60" 1080p/600Hz Plasma. Gorgeous picture.

Today, my dad picked up a Samsung 51" 1080p/600Hz Plasma. Helped him get it set up and I was just blown away with the picture quality. Especially with movies. He was coming from a Samsung 40" 720p/60Hz LCD.

After I helped him set his up, I went right out and purchased the same 51" TV. Going to test out some Blu-ray movies on it after the Phillies game tonight.

This is my 3rd flat screen TV. I also have a Samsung 46" 1080p/120Hz LED in my basement I use for my PS3, and a Samsung 46" 1080p/120Hz LCD TV that I had in my living room until I moved it for the Plasma I bought.

Gonna put the LCD TV in my bedroom to watch in bed. I've been reading a lot of positive things about Plasma lately, so I'm sure I won't regret the purchase.

You do not have to be sitting directly in front of a DLP TV to have a good picture, that is a myth and was mostly with the older types.Mitsubishi is still making them, the last of the major manufacturers but after readind AVS Forum extensively, I agree with their sentiment that DLP is still the best for the price. Also, Plasma has more of an issue with glare and viewing angle than DLP does. I still will take my 2008 DLP over anything I see in the stores as far as LCD or Plasma.Heres a good quote in response to a 55 inch LCD at Walmart:What BRAND is the 55" LCD at WalMart? I bet you it is not a well-known or respected brand and it is not 3D ready, nor will it have the same picture quality of a DLP. Any decent branded 65" LCD w/ 120Hz & 3D costs in the $3,000-$5,000 range. One can get a 73" DLP with 3D ready for $1,200. DLP outperforms an LCD in both picture quality and 3D quality. DLP projectors are also used in RealD Cinema and newer IMAX theatres for 3-D films. DLP is THE STANDARD for movie theaters. Don't get me wrong, LCD's have their place. I own LCD computer monitors and even an LCD TV. Yet when it comes to size, picture quality and bang for buck, the DLP reigns supreme. Each has their pros and cons but it's wrong to dismiss DLP as costly and outdated because it is the complete opposite of that.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry about the spacing, for some reason when I post from this computer at work the line spacing doesnt work right!

DLP is what is used in the theaters. Not a DLP tv, but a DLP projector. Which was my original question. Why not just go with a projector and get a 100" -120" screen? Flat panel prices have dropped considerably in the past 2-3 years. Your pricing is off. http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIER...=operasport-20
                65" Panasonic Plasma 1080P with 3D for $1600 shipped....not quite $3K-5K.

DLP is a good value if you have the space, but I don't think you'll find a lot of experts saying it has a better PQ than a plasma or LCD. Maybe I've missed something, but I haven't seen a DLP make the Top 10 on any HDTV shootout in years.

Not sure where you were going with the Walmart stuff. Why not mention Best Buy if you want to talk brick and mortar, or online retailers like Amazon?

That was a response I posted from a different site. The prices may be a bit off now, but DLP is sort of the forgotten technology when it comes to HDTV's nowadays. Also, they are bigger but now HUGE like you seem to imply. My DLP from 2008 is a slimline thin TV and you wouldnt know it was DLP unless you looked closely.

It's funny when I originally created this thread, I was coming from a DLP to a LCD or Plasma.

My parents have a 2006 Samsung DLP. 50" and it's only 720p -_- I am hoping that thing goes out before I move back for the summer. Somehow the bulb in it has lasted like a year longer prolonging it's death.

A burnt bulb doesnt mean its dead. Its like a $75 fix. Im still on my original bulb.

I know. I have had the TV for 6 years... The hassle of changing a bulb for a ****ty 6 year old 720p TV isn't worth it when I can just convince them to buy a new one that is bigger and a lot better.

The may not be the proper thread, but I figured I ask here anyway...

Have any of you had any experience with a Audio and Video Transmission System? Basically, I have one DVR and want to watch the same thing in the bed room that I can watch in the living room (where the DVR is). I already have a remote control extender, so I believe something like this: http://www.amazon.com/RF-Link-AVS-58...uct/B0002EXJ8Y is all that I would need.

An extra box from Cox is an additional $10 a month, so I will recoup the cost in about 10 months. I'm already dropping over $200 a month on cable/internet so I really don't want to give Cox even more money each month. Thoughts?

Actually seems about par for the course if you desire any of the premium (HBO, showtime, etc) channels and have HD.
