Re: Plasma or LCD?
For this educational software class I'm taking, I was 1 of 7 teachers to receive a free HP Probook and 720p 3LCD Hitachi projector. Maybe I can convince my gf to let me hook up the projector to a blu ray player at the new house she is renting.-->

LCD projectors are brighter and allow you more placement options. DLP projectors are less expensive but darker and placement is limited.Last edited by GAMEC0CK2002; 12-17-2010, 06:47 PM.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD?
I present to the OS board for approval.
I know its not the top of the line Panny plasma but I have a few reasons for going with this one.
1. If all goes well I should be moving into a larger house within the next year. I would eventually like to move up to something 58" or more. I wouldn't feel that bad about spending this amount for a "stop gap" tv.
2. TV will be mainly used for sports and gaming. I have PS3 so I can use the 1080p.
3. I have a $50 Walmart gift card I can use on the purchase.
I would appreciate any feedback from the experts around here. Thanks guys.Good job! Good effort!Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD?
Nice tv, especially at that price (and having a gift card). Solid choice. Amazon.com wants $925 for the same tv:

Re: Plasma or LCD?
I currently have a 2.5 year old 42" Samsung 720p plasma that has issues and is out of warranty. It started with one vertical line from top to bottom of the screen the width of one pixel. It looks like someone shooting a laser pointer across the screen.
Well that one line turned into 2, than 3, etc... At last count I have 14 lines across the screen. Its like watching tv through prison bars.
I have run out of patience and anything bigger then 50" would not fit in my current place. So I wanted something new without spending a fortune and this is the best value I could find.Good job! Good effort!Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD?
Question for some of you, myth is is THX certified for picture setting, I never used up until last night, it looks so similar to what I had my own settings at, I think I'm leaving it for my tv and game settings, the reason being is I don't have to mess with anything because THX is already set for the best picture viewing, how many of you guys use this feature that have it on there sets?N.Y Mets

Re: Plasma or LCD?
Do you mean the default settings are THX certified?
Anyway, as you answer that haha I'm quickly going to jump to my own question, because I don't know as much about the newer plasma screens. Anyway, we have one here at home but we've had it maybe since 2006. I'm not ever a fan of watching a show that changes the horizontal/vertical proportions (for instance, a 4:3 broadcast filling up a 16:9 screen).
Do you all do this, or do you leave the bars on the side? I ask because we leave the bars on the side, but the default option is to have gray bars and you can change to black bars, though you'll begin to notice a burn-in process take place after some weeks (technically it's all but the black bars that are burning in, so the sides are lighter in the end). So again, does anyone with a plasma screen (who have "broken in" your set) that keeps black bars on 4:3 broadcasts without problems?Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD?
Dynamic mode on a LCD? (Samsung)
Should I stay away from that or what?
I bought my mother a "early" xmas present and I configured the settings (via avs) and every time i go to her house, she has it back on "torch mode"
I know torch mode is bad for plasma but how about for LCD? Does it wear down the bulb faster?
It seems like most of the suggested settings for her Tv gives a darker pictures and she loves the bright look (her house doesnt have alot of light in living room)Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD?
Yeah, it definitely torches the television. I understand that effect torch mode has on people thinking they have a good picture with overboasted contrast and black level settings, but there are better things you can do with it. Believe me, once she adjusts to any settings you change, I don't think she'll be complaining.
If you're talking about watching TV I'd say put it on Standard mode, take the sharpness down to 0, and for a second turn off the black level setting (or whatever it's called) and put the dynamic contrast setting to OFF or LOW. After that, you can do some knob tweedling. Contrast can be anywhere between 92 - 100 (look to your eye what gives the best discrepancy), and then try and lower the brightness just enough so that you're not crushing any blacks yet they look "deep enough." After that, adjust the backlight accordingly so you're giving it a bright image still but not brightening the blacks too much again (I have mine set to 6 for TV for example, though it's at 1 for movies). Also turn off DNR and EE. The rest is gamma and color correction, and you can leave that up to the AVS guys to tell you what color settings look best.
If you're talking about watching movies, it's a whole 'nother animal. It's almost the same thing, but deep blacks without crush tend to be what's most important while turning off anything that's considered post-processing on the image (except for color timing again).
I once went into my room and noticed instantly that my friend was watching a movie when Game Mode was on (the settings I have for playing video games), and I said, "No man, this isn't right" and I turned it off. The first thing he said was, "Dude why did you do that? Now the picture is darker, you think that's better or something?" I don't think he realized all of the things that changed, but I showed him an example after the movie was over of my PS3 XMB background with Game Mode on and off. It's an IMAX screencap of The Dark Knight which boasts some excellent black levels and shadow detail, but all of it gets crushed when Game Mode is on. He noticed this instantly and agreed the amount of detail was much better and much more proper after that.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment
