Western Digital Drive failure
I recently am having problems with my Western Digital "My Book" external hard drave where my computer doesn't recognize it. The problem is that I have 10,000 MP3 files on it that I'd like to recover and transfer to another external drive if I can. One company says they can do it for $600.00. Does anyone have any ideas I can try before I make this plunge?I may be wrong, but I doubt it.Tags: None -

I had a Seagate one do the same thing. Luckily for me there wasn't anything on there that I didn't have stored elsewhere.
As far as I know, there's no fix to get your PC to recognize it, but you can have the data transferred off either from the company or via Geek Squad.I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be. - Douglas Adams

My WD drive did the same thing. This is a good idea, it's possible the controller inside the enclosure has gone bad and not the drive itself. I've had this happen on a couple of enclosures over the years.
Something like this makes for an excellent (not to mention handy) diagnostic tool to have around.
