    Western Digital Drive failure

I recently am having problems with my Western Digital "My Book" external hard drave where my computer doesn't recognize it. The problem is that I have 10,000 MP3 files on it that I'd like to recover and transfer to another external drive if I can. One company says they can do it for $600.00. Does anyone have any ideas I can try before I make this plunge?
I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

How old is it? They usually have a good warranty and some times will transfer files.

The warrentee is off, it's almost 6 yrs old. I was just wondering if anyone experienced this and had ideas before I crack my piggy bank

I had a Seagate one do the same thing. Luckily for me there wasn't anything on there that I didn't have stored elsewhere.

As far as I know, there's no fix to get your PC to recognize it, but you can have the data transferred off either from the company or via Geek Squad.

You can try opening up the enclosure and usually it is a standard or slim hard drive in there. Then you can just connect it to you computer if you aren't using a laptop.

My WD drive did the same thing. I ended up getting a new one, but it pissed me off.

This is a good idea, it's possible the controller inside the enclosure has gone bad and not the drive itself. I've had this happen on a couple of enclosures over the years.

Something like this makes for an excellent (not to mention handy) diagnostic tool to have around.

(not necessarily this specific one, there are a million cheap ones out there that do the same thing)
