Re: Lights Out On FX 1-11-11
The networks haven't figured out how to really deal with the way things have changed. There are a number of people who have come up to me and said, "This weekend I watched four episodes on Saturday and four episodes on Sunday." That's how people want to watch them now. Those people don't count in terms of advertising. When you do dramas like this people will say, "I can't wait for the DVD set." Nobody needs to watch it Tuesday night at 10 that night and wait for 13 weeks to see it unspool.
Truer words couldn't have been said about the nature of television right now.
I watch Lights Out on Hulu. I don't count to advertisers either, I guess. But, I bet there are many people that do the same.
There are a number of shows I wait on to watch. Damages is one. The Wire is another. I just didn't have time to watch them air live and with The Wire I now have 5 seasons (well less now) to watch at my own pace.
Lights Out had the right story. Great story. But, it's one of those shows that can't really survive on television."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob NeyerComment
