Re: Top 10 Looking Blu ray Movies

The movies are great looking but if you want to show off that hdtv, Planet Earth/Life have been my "show off my tv" blu rays.

But since we are talking movies, the cartoons win hands down most of them. Kung Fu Panda, Despicable me, Happy Feet, A Christmas Carol, TMNT are some I didn't see anyone say.

As for regular movies, you have to check out Red Cliff, Man on Fire, Watchmen, also any The fast and the furious movies.

Also gotta throw in some of the comedies: Hot Fuzz and Sex Drive are amazing looking too.

Even Disney's older animated movies are pretty good looking on blu-ray. They're definitely more vivid and more detailed than previous editions.

I heard that blu-ray version of twilight zone is something to see. They say the stars twinkle so much more and etc.

Might as well stick The Incredibles atop these lists now, by the way.

Except for the Pixar movies which are always steller the one movie that stands above everyone else in both picture and sound is The Thin Red Line. I have alot of great looking BR's but the moment you play this you will pretty much say "Holy ****." It may be also due to the cinematography but the clarity and vividness just gives it this natural "pop" that I have not seen in any other BR and the sound is pure reference. If you have a big enough TV calibrated correctly you really feel you are with them in the movie because of the way the battle scenes are directed.

It's pretty pricey because it's a Criterian but it is worth the $35 price tag if you are a fan of the movie because there are lots of great special features as well. In my book it's TTRD and then everything else is a notch below. It really is pure BR bliss.

Actually honourable mention goes to the 1st 3 Bond movies as well. Dr No, From Russia With Love and Goldfinger are fantastic transfers especially considering they are all 35+ years old. Dr No with it's Bahamas setting really makes you want to go on vacation after watching it because it looks so lush. All 3 could easily pass for movies that you think were made in the last decade.

I've heard such great things about The Thin Red Line and I'm really hoping Criterion releases it outside of the USA. Region locking is not cool.

I've also heard that in terms of TV shows, Mad Men looks outstanding on blu ray.

The OP could always search the bluray.com or hidefdigest.com reviews. HDD actually has a way of sorting the movies based on video quality

Criterion (from the limited ones I have anyway) seems to do a wonderful job. Disney does a great job on their older cartoons. WB is another good one with their older films - Wizard of Oz looks amazing and Casablanca is very good as well.

Yeah, any Pixar movie. Also agree with Iron Man, Transformers. Star Trek, and Planet Earth. Surprised Casino Royale hasn't been mentioned yet.

Casino Royale is great, it just isn't in my Top 10. If he wants more suggestions, I'll recommend more.
