    History Channel: The Third Reich

    Anyone else catch this?

Absolutely fascinating miniseries on History Channel. The first part covers the rise of the Nazis and the second is the fall of the Nazis, but it is completely done through the letters of German people. Basically covers how the German people allowed the Nazi party to ultimately rise to power.

Shows all of the old Nazi Propaganda films, home video from German citizens during the 20s-40s, and the letters of the German people after they realized just what the Nazis had been up to.

One of the more interesting aspects was how the Nazis managed to gain control while only being a small minority of the German population.

Very slickly done and shows just how evil can rise when the people are either too scared or too desperate to stop it.

If you are a history junkie like me, I highly recommend checking it out when it re-airs.

This sounds like my kinda thing. BTW it is indeed amazing how Hitler used great political maneuvering and blackmail to get himself into power. In fact, it's downright fascinating in a scary way.

Hopefully this miniseries airs up here on our History Television but if not i'm sure I can find a way to see this.

    Thanks for the heads up!

      Was watching this earlier...interesting stuff.

I for one am thankful that Hitler was dumb enough to send his troops into Russia during the winter.

Hittler was a nut know doubt, but he was one hell of a leader. I still can't believe what he was able to do. It does seems like a lot of bad people sure could get a lot of people to follow their vision. I watched this the other night. Very cool and sad at the same time.

Yeah I was talking to a history buff and I can't remember what he said, but I think he said that was not the biggest reason he lost. I try to argued his view. When I have that training again I will ask him why. It was a history class training.

You'd think that after World War I Hitler would have known not to attempt to fight a two (or more) front war, but apparently he didn't. Crazy dictators are so self-centered that they think they are invincible and it often leads to their downfall.

                  Saw it as well.

It's amazing how blatant those propaganda films were

                  (On joining the Hitler Youth)
"...But momma! The other boys swim, cook, hike, and even sing! Why can't I join? Why I even know the song they were singing!"

It's easy to say how that could never happen in America, but the miniseries basically told us how it happen in Germany, and by the time the Germans realized what was going on, they were in a World War.

Yeah, Hitler thought the Brits were basically subdued so he kept to an air campaign in the UK and concentrated on Russia. As it turned out, the UK was well served having Winston Churchill as leader at that time. I think if anyone else was occupying 10 Downing Street the Brits would've come to the table and surrendered.

The one anti-Britain rally song (went something like "Down with the British lion, bombs bombs bombs over Britain") was crazy...I still can't believe he got away with all that.

It's amazing to think about what the world would be like if the Germans won the war. I mean, that means Hitler would've had all of Europe and the US under his control...who was really going to step up and overthrow that?

Actually Hitler had no designs on the US. In fact, he was quite upset and angry about the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor as he didn't want the US to be involved in the war.

Even if the Germans won the war, they wouldn't have seized US territory or even the British Isles, most likely. For one thing, it would be nothing short of impossible for Hitler to stage an invasion of the US mainland in the 1940s. The Germans couldn't even invade Britain and that was just miles north of the French coastline.

Secondly, if we did not get involved in the war, I am not sure Germany would have won anyways. I think a likely scenario is that the Soviets repel the German invasion and fight the Germans all the way back to western France before surrendering, essentially bringing the Iron Curtain over the entirety of Europe, including France, Italy (possibly), and Austria. So, in effect, we'd end up with the Soviets controlling territory from the Pacific Ocean in the Far East to the western shores of France in the West.
