I noticed they must have reprinted his albums recently because the store had Bitches Brew and one other (forget the name, but I know it wasn't Birth of Cool or Kind of Blue). I was very tempted to pick up Bitches Brew, but at $30 I figured I could find it somewhere else for cheaper.

Re: Vinyl Collectors?
Okay, so I ordered my own table (finally) and speakers.
Audioengine A2 speakers. They're a bookshelf speaker set, but the reviews for these things are pretty damn convincing. I figured they would be a good entry into my first real stereo set-up.

As for the table...
It's a Pro-Ject Debut III in gloss white. It's belt-driven. From the reviews I read this table is a good place to start for a budding audiophile or if you're just wanting to play vinyls then you probably wouldn't need much more than this. The table can be upgraded down the line so that it won't be "outgrown" quickly. I would like to get an acrylic platter eventually and we'll see how the cartridge is when I get it.

Amazon, actually. Needledoctor.com is a good site, too. My dad has actually ordered a needle from them before.

Basically, I just want a table, good cartridge, and some speakers that don't need a receiver to be amplified. Do you mind me asking how much you paid for that?Kansas City Royals | FC Barcelona | New Orleans Pelicans

Re: Vinyl Collectors?
I don't know a lot of stuff about vinyl but if you want to have an awakening look for a "RL" pressing of Led Zeppelin II. The sound that comes from one of those pressings is mind blowing. Even non audiophiles can usually tell the difference between the "RL" pressing and any other Led Zeppelin II album.
To find one of these, look at the dead wax in the middle of the record. If you find Robert Ludwig's initials, buy it.Oakland Athletics San Jose Sharks

~$600. The speakers are 200 bucks and the table varies by color choice (I believe it comes in flat black for $50 cheaper). I had originally considered a Music Hall USB-1 turntable for awhile, but once I saw the Sumiko Pro-Ject, I needed it. Stereophile actually has a review of the Music Hall here. On page two is a little write up about the Audioengine A5 speakers which are bigger versions of the A2.

Re: Vinyl Collectors?
Cross posted from the recent purchases thread:
I picked up some old original vinyl at the thrift store today for $0.68 a piece
The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
The Beatles - The Beatles Again
Chicago Transit Authority - 1
Chicago Transit Authority - 2
Glenn Miller - Originals
George Michael - Faith
All in perfect shape in regards to the cover and actual vinyl and they're complete with all the items like pictures, booklets, etc. A really good haul especially in relation to what I paid per LP compared to actual value.
It's so rewarding to pull out a perfect copy of something like Magical Mystery Tour after wading through tons of crap like Liza Minnelli and the My Fair Lady soundtrack. Seriously, every single thrift store I go to to look for records has at least one copy of My Fair Lady and Cabaret. Every. single. one.
My big thing I look for is old jazz albums, especially Blue Note, and old classic rock, but I tend to pick up anything I like to listen to or has cool album artwork. Sometimes I get lucky, but most times its a needle in a haystack but when I hit I usually do really well.
It would be so simple and easy to just go cruise eBay and pick up all the albums I want but the fun just isn't there. I love the thrill of the hunt. I don't go shoot Deer or Ducks I go thrifting and look through dozens upon dozens of Christmas albums, Hymns, and other assorted undesirables to find something good.
The day I manage to find Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and the Dominos and Making Movies by Dire Straits will be a very happy day as Layla and Romeo and Juliet are absolute 2 favorite songs. As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. Re: Vinyl Collectors?
Yeah, I buy all my used/old LPs in person. For the new ones I just order from Amazon because it is usually a good $5-10 cheaper than the local shops. I haven't gone digging in a while, though. I'm moving this weekend so I should be able to get some pictures of my turntable up soon.

Re: Vinyl Collectors?
Same. I bought a cheapo record player from sears for $70 but the platter on it is warped to hell, so I'm super reluctant to play my records on it. Looking for a decent one to ask for for my 20th birthday.
I bought a pair of KRK RP5 g2 studio monitors and they sound GODLY when I play normal tunes through them. I'm running them through a cheap tascam audio interface into my computer, and am running my turntable through the audio interface as well. They're a bit pricey ($150 per monitor), but WELL worth the money. Regardless of what I'm playing, it sounds like the band is playing live in the studio instead of a lifeless mp3 track. One of the best investments I've made, highly recommend them to someone just getting into hi-fi audio.
Speaking of vinyl steals, I found an original pressing of Michael Jackson's Off The Wall at the local store where I live for $4. It has the wrong sleeve, but plays perfectly fine.Comment

Re: Vinyl Collectors?
I unboxed my table and speakers this weekend. I had to order a preamp, though, because my table's signal is too quiet. I ordered a Cambridge 640P phono preamp which I'm hoping will do me good for awhile as I would eventually like to upgrade to a tube preamp.
I also ordered the classic vinyl bookshelf aka the Expedit bookshelf from Ikea, though I had to order it off of Amazon because Ikea's shipping was $250 for a $70 bookshelf!
I'm thinking of ordering a matching table top or floating tv console so I can move my turntable and speakers and set it on the top (which is the side in the picture) of the bookshelf. In my search for the best vinyl shelves, I came across this really helpful website which basically takes Ikea furniture and customizes them into some pretty nice looking dj consoles.
Ikea DJ Console: UPDATE 2015 Some of the Ikea furniture pieces have changed names and dimensions and I don't know if you can still make this. But take a look in the comments below - there are some excellent new designs using two 4x4 Kallax shelves with legs and a ta…
And this one feautres a cable box on the back end, which would be a nice addition eventually. http://www.instructables.com/id/Ultimate-Ikea-DJ-Unit/

Re: Vinyl Collectors?
The thrift store that yielded my previous haul came through with a bounty today
The vinyl on all of these is pretty nice and clean, the covers show their age on some of them but they're still presentable, and they're mostly complete with the extras.
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Eric Clapton - Slow Hand
YES - 90215
Queen - A Night At The Opera
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
Bob Seger - Live Bullet
Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow
Wings - Venus and Mars
Wings - Back To The Egg
Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story
Chicago - V
Journey - Evolution
Journey - Infinity
Journey - Escape
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick (great album presentation with the newspaper thing too)
Joan Jett - I Love Rock n Roll
Billy Joel - The Stranger
Elton John - Don't Shoot Me
Blondie - Parallel Lines
Neil Young - Harvest
Santana - Abraxas
James Taylor - & The Original Flying Machine
Total price out the door was like $18.00
Finding all these were so exciting, especially the Dire Straits album, after having to dig through tons of filthy, dusty Christmas albums at a previous thrift store only to find nothing. I'm reasonably sure these were probably part of the same collection the previously acquired Beatles and Chicago albums came from based on how well maintained the vinyl and most of the covers are, as well as the overall taste in music. I never manage to find classic rock albums anywhere else and that's another indication these all could've came from the same collection. As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. Re: Vinyl Collectors?
$18 for that haul? I'm jealous. That Dire Straits album is great. The tone of that album is just awesome and while its cleaner than I like, it is incredible.
I went to the record store and came away with 2 great ones and a decent one with:
Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin - Love Devotion Surrender
The Cars - The Cars
The Eagles - Long Run
Love Devotion Surrender is amazing, such awesome guitar work and the fusion of jazz and latin music is so smooth.
The Cars is basically everything you hear on the radio and it blows my mind that their debut album is probably equivalent to buying a greatest hits compilation. I really dig this album more than I probably should. Its catchy, its got some nice guitar work lying just beneath the surface, and there's subtle humor in each song.
The Long Run I have only listened to a couple songs so I can't say much other than compared to the previous two this album lacks something that I will call soul. The songs are great, but it just feels effortless in a "this is way too easy", going through the motions type of way. I guess I'll use this as a starting point and work my way backward, which means Hotel California is going to be my next one. Fun.
There were a couple Chicago albums there that I would like to pick up if they're still there in the future.
