    Windows 8

not to sure about this...i want to see this on a desktop but for now it looks nice on a tablet

We're live from Microsoft Windows president Steven Sinofsky's keynote at D9, and there's something rather exciting on stage -- a pair of experimental Windows 8 dev boards running an OS that looks very much like Windows Phone 7's Metro UI. All Things D actually sat down with the man earlier today and got a sneak peek at what to expect starting with the live tiled screen you see above -- and yes, like Windows Phone 7, this OS is designed for touch. There'll be two kinds of applications for Windows 8, one that runs in a traditional desktop, and the other pseudo-mobile apps based on HTML5 and Javascript, but both environments -- rather, the entire OS -- have been designed from the ground up for touchscreen use. Keyboard and mouse will still be options for both sets of programs, but there are multiple virtual sets of keys for different form factors, including a split keyboard for vertical slate use. Multitasking is simply a matter of swiping running apps into the center of the screen, and you can pull windows partway to "snap" them in place alongside other windows -- even mixing and matching traditional desktop programs with web apps simultaneously (like Twitter alongside your spreadsheet). There's a new version of Internet Explorer 10 (which runs Silverlight) and an app store built into the touchscreen interface, along with integrated services like Office 365. Microsoft says the new OS will run on laptops, tablets and desktops when it appears -- whenever that might be. All Things D didn't have any details on when we'll get pricing or availability, but we're looking at some Intel Atom-based demo units on stage right now, and Microsoft says it will have ARM designs (the OS will support NVIDIA, TI and Qualcomm) viewable on the Computex show floor, and more will be revealed at the Build Windows developer conference in September. We should note that "Windows 8" is just a codename for what we're seeing here -- "we'll figure out the real name in due time," Sinofsky told the crowd -- but we don't see much harm in calling it Windows 8 for now. a rumor xbox360 support with Win8

According to our sources, Xbox 360 on PC will have a subscription fee (just like Xbox Live). However, when it comes to online gaming, it will use Windows Live Marketplace and as a result, PC owners will not be able to compete against console owners (at least in initial stage), due to plausible frustrations (mouse vs. controller).

      Re: Windows 8

I'm all for it, but didn't Windows 7 like just come out? I wish they released this a little later, at least so that my upgrade wouldn't seem so damn expensive lol.

I wonder if I can still use my student staff discount and get it at the bookstore for $10 now that I've graduated haha.

EDIT: Ugh, I hate the change. Anything that has to say "app" reminds me too much of Apple, and their success is running other companies toward the kinds of new innovations they do. Quite frankly, it's disturbingly annoying. Just bring back icons for the PC version, mmkthxbai.

I believe you can switch to the standard desktop, you don't have to use the metro UI. At least I hope so, if not I will switch to Linux full time.

App has now become a marketing buzzword for the smartphone generation. It's used with everything now.

Well, it's definitely been made popular by Apple (since "app" is in their name, after all). Just like the very PC laptop I'm typing on right now, my mouse pad is one of those kinds where the left and right click buttons are also a part of the mouse scrolling as opposed to being their own buttons. It's copying Apple just for the sake of copying Apple, it has no benefits and is annoying. This is just like the argument with Call of Duty and its perks. Just because people like it in Call of Duty doesn't mean it should be implemented in every game.

I like Windows because it's different from Mac.

Yeah I understand what you are saying and agree with you. The use the word app doesn't really bother me though.

It's just short for application. I think this looks fantastic. I'm interested in what they will do with Windows 8 and then what Google will do next.

Oh, I didn't mean the use of the word, I just mean what the word has brought to the table as far as this generation goes.

That UI looks like it was designed with Kinect in mind.

Agreed. It's no secret that Kinect will be coming to PC's sometime in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a refinement in the 360 Dashboard UI to incorporate some of these elements as well.

I hate the UI. I hope I can change it. I like using my keyboard and mouse, it's more efficient and faster than touch. The ui could be good for tablets and stuff but I like my desktops to look like one

The final release will probably be a year from now at the very minimum, so its not like this is coming out in the immediate future. Should be a beta in the fall though for those that are interested.
