    Cars 2 (Pixar)

Since I got The Incredibles on Blu-ray, I will be able to see this film for free with the provided ticket voucher. Unfortunately, I was skeptic about how it would turn out since it was announced to release. It simply seemed like a cash grab, as this film rolls in the billions in merchandise sales. I wasn't convinced that the characters on screen, as well as the themes provided, could deliver another compelling enough story that could be a heartwarming experience for a mature audience, ala Toy Story 3.

Well, it comes out this Friday, and through a small sample size of 25 reviews as of now on RottenTomatoes, it looks to be Pixar's first true "dud," so to speak (currently standing at 52%):

Discover reviews, ratings, and trailers for Cars 2 on Rotten Tomatoes. Stay updated with critic and audience scores today!

I don't really know what to say, but I expected this. I'll still be seeing it, and I'll hold onto hope that it's better than most animated films out there, there's no denying that. It's just that, with Mater's reprising role jumping into the lead position with Lightning McQueen, I think most of the jokes will be for the kids. I just didn't think Pixar would "stoop" to this level, per se.

We'll see how it turns out. I'm sure it will be a fine animated movie, but I think it's a different targeted demographic than the TS3 crowd.

Yeah the original CARS had a lot of heart and meaning to it. Hell, it wasn't even all that funny but you could tell that it was done with great care and told an awesome story. Any movie that gets me to cry a little has to be doing something right!

Unfortunately, what I know of the plot for the sequel this is Cash Grab City.

Right, and I'm not saying that selling out is a bad thing when you can still make quality movies, but I just didn't see Pixar as a studio who would actually sell out, ever. Again, this movie should carry some heart, and I'm sure it will deliver on that front. The difference will be what standard they're held at, and how said standard wasn't met with most reviewers.

I'm going to have to check the review synopses and see if their consensus basically is: "A stunningly visual treat for the family to sit back and enjoy watching, but it fails to deliver on the more maturely-themed level that Pixar has been known to come through with time and time again."

I'm taking my little brother to see it, and really, If it's anything like the 1st, then trying to find the subtle homages to real-life people/events (Brett Mustangberger, Darryl Cartrip) will be enough to keep me from falling asleep i the theater.

Top critics have it currently (6-22-11) at 5-2 on the plus side, but even a "fresh" reviewer had this to say:

"Cars 2 narrowly avoids becoming Pixar's first truly bad movie, but it's definitely the studio's worst movie."

All 11 Pixar Rotten Tomatoes Scores

            1995- Toy Story-100%
            1998-A Bug's Life-91%
            1999-Toy Story 2-100%
            2001-Monsters Inc-95%
            2003-Finding Nemo-98%
            2004-The Incredibles-97%
            2006-Cars-74%
            2007-Ratatouille-96%
            2008-Wall-E-96%
            2009-UP-98%
            2010-Toy Story 3-99%

An incredible record no matter what you think of Rotten Tomatoes. I noticed the first Cars was the critical weak link to a dominating array of films.

I'm sure it won't be as bad as some are saying, nor do I think it'll be at the top of the Pixar pantheon. I'm saddened that they are now diving head first into the sequel route, and I wasn't a big fan of Toy Story 3. That being said, to think that Pixar will put out something on par with the Dreamworks drivel like Madagascar or Shark Tale would surprise me.

                Re: Cars 2 (Pixar)

Cars was probably the only Pixar movie I didn't care for. I won't be seeing Cars 2.

On the list JayBee posted the only one I've never seen is Wall-E. I don't know why though...

My favorite Pixar movie is probably Monsters Inc.

I was about to say the same thing. I have always liked Cars more than Up, but I guess my opinion is incorrect

Probably better saved for a discussion in this thread that never really took off:

The general thing you have to remember is that 100% doesn't mean a perfect movie, and 0% doesn't mean a disaster film. It's the percentage of fresh reviews out of all reviews, and if everyone likes it "just enough," you can get a 100% score.

For me it's all three Toy Storys and The Incredibles.

I don't know if it's held in such high regard. It certainly is the ultimate consensus of critical film opinion.

Toy Story movies were outstanding. I enjoyed Cars as well. Will likely see this with the g/f soon enough. I don't necessarily like Mater as a character, so I'm not holding out much hope for this movie. He seems like a character in there that's just in for the dumb laughs.

I liked Cars, its on the lower end of Pixar movies for me, but still not my least favorite out of the ones I have seen. I'm actually surprised it got a sequel because it was the lowest rated of their films.

They do have a new story coming up after Cars 2 though, then it will be followed by a prequel to Monster's Inc.

I'd say my favorite Pixar movie was The Incredibles.
