Looks like this film holds an 86% on RT so far. I'm just hoping critics don't approach this film with "Oh Cars 2 sucked, so this won't be any good" type of bias.

Not like being a spin off of How To Train Your Dragon would be a bad thing, I loved that movie.

I would like to know what others thought of this movie, given that they've seen it.

I left some impressions in the movies recently watched thread, but I thought the story was dreadful... perhaps the worst idea they could have come up with, given the material. These characters, this setting, the film's title, and even the trailers deserved a much better film than Pixar put out, and that's saying something.

The scenery was beautiful, the character models were ehhh, and the voice acting, while natural, got a bit unnerving. I rank Cars 2 well above this for the sake that it was enjoyable, and I think Pixar really mucked up this time.

Well, I've been doing some snooping and learned a few things:

The screenplay was by Mark Andrews, Steve Purcell, Brenda Chapman, Irene Mecchi. None of which are John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton (who was busy making John Carter,) Brad Bird (who was busy making Mission Impossible 4,) or Pete Doctor. These are the guys that make Pixar movies go. Their presence was missed (I realized that they were probably involved in various stages of the film, but when I say their presence was missed, I mean I wish it was more apparent).

And a quote from somebody I've been talking to:

"It actually started as a quite-dark Pixar project under the control of Brenda Chapman. Once the Pix-Ney merger took place, the script was Disney-fied up and Chapman was removed/fired from the project in favor of Mark Andrews, who was prepared to tow the Disney line and make another 'Princess Movie' (tm) to hawk doll and toy lines with."

Apparently there is somebody on the Internet who was a part of the initial storyboarding process for the film, and I'm trying to figure out what the original one was like.

Pixar never lost it touch. This may feel like a different film by the studio but it's one that succeeds.

Forget the quote, this is what critics are saying. Even long-time fans are saying the same thing. I haven't seen the film, but the general opinion is that it's too Disney and I find that to be a wrong direction for Pixar.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer
