    IP Flooding Virus

    Hey guys!

Didn't know if anyone could offer any advice...

I was having tons of trouble with connecting to the internet (Bright House Networks is our local Tampa, FL cable/internet provider). Using the modem they provide and the Netgear router, I was unable to connect to the internet (or terribly spotty at best).

Long story short... Their tech guy came out yesterday. We thought (well, he did) that the router had gone bad. Even he couldn't connect with his laptop. What we discovered is that my PC could not connect when my laptop was on. The laptop is flooding the router to the point it cannot connect - nothing can. But when the laptop is shut completely off the problem goes away.

He stated I have something called "IP Flooding Virus." I bought the laptop 3 years ago at BestBuy (Toshiba). I don't know all the specifics on it. I'm a tech moron. The other problem is that a year ago my wife spilled Diet Pepsi on it. I was able to get it working but now the "E" and "T" keys don't work (so I cannot phone home).

I use a plugged in usb keyboard - not ideal but it works. I don't know how to fix this stuff myself. Is it worth taking back to Geek Squad (who did all the original stuff on my laptop when I purchased it)? What should I be aware of? Will they try to take advantage of me?

Would appreciate any help here... I give a lot back to the community in the way of rosters and this really puts a crimp in my ability to do this because my PC is a mile away from my 360, so all that is on hold.

    Thanks! mike

Download AVG and MalwareBytes on the desktop, put them on a thumb drive and run them on your laptop, unconnected from the network. After you do that, reconnect to the router and see if it's fixed. If not, you'll probably need to do a wipe of the machine and clean reinstall (unless someone else has some ideas).

Your keyboard doesn't really have anything to do with it.

I would NOT take it back to Geek Squad until the bitter end. AVG and MalwareBytes are good options to run first before resorting to taking it to GS.

When messing with an already infected PC I use:

Get Windows antivirus for PC & laptop: block viruses & protect against malware. Download AVG AntiVirus Free, now!

It solves a lot of headaches with the better designed viruses/spyware (those that block antivirus/antispyware programs).

Ok ready? We'll need to figure out what type of virus/malware/spyware it is. In the end, It may just be best to reformat the system and start fresh. But we can try to recover your system either way. Here's what to do. It's probably best to download all of this on a non-infected system and burn it on to a CD. Then use that CD on the infected laptop.

          Download Malware Bytes.

          Download RKill

          Download ATF-Cleaner

Once you have all 3 downloaded, install and update on the infected computer.

Once the update is complete, restart to safe mode (Hit F8 when your manufacturer's logo appears) and once prompted select just "Safe Mode"

When it starts up, run RKill. Wait for it to completely finish (should bring up a text document with the results) and see if it detects anything. Post it here.

When RKill is complete, run ATF-Cleaner. Select all and then Empty Selected. This takes all unnecessary files and deletes them.

Once that's complete, run MalwareBytes. Run a full scan on the laptop. It may take a few hours to complete. If it finds anything it should prompt you to restart, go ahead and restart. Post what it finds here.

After the laptop starts up, test your internet connection and see if its working back to normal.

If it doesn't, click on Start > Run > then type in MSCONFIG
go to the Startup tab, and disable everything listed. Restart, and try again.

If it still doesn't work, the log of the viruses found might give me more clues. Otherwise it might be best to reformat.

Have you tried to reset your router to factory settings? Maybe someone is ghosting on your network and killing your bandwidth. Or someone is bridging through your laptop to deny internet.

          Maybe Anonymous?

Thanks so much, Shugknight!! I was able to get the other way to finalize, but still have the same problem. I have taken your notes and have the programs. Thanks again...you didn't have to do this, but it helps me tremendously!! Appreciate it...

(I'll let you know what comes of this)...

You should be able to replace your keyboard for $10 and an hour of your time.

Shugknight... My many thanks! I'm back up and running. Took me quite awhile to run the programs but you saved me some cash and for that I want to thank you!!! I had multiple issues, and I'll probably purchase the programs to finalize some things but what I was able to do for free (using you links) has me back up and running. Really do appreciate your help!!!

And, Snepp - thanks! I'll look into that. As stated, computers are not my thing, but let me see what I can do. Appreciate it!

Good to hear it worked well for you MK..

And yes you can get the keyboard easily replaced. (Takes about 4 screws, and a couple connectors) but if you don't mind using the external keyboard, you don't need to waste the additional money. But if you take your laptop on the go with you, it's probably best to do so, so you don't have to lug around that huge keyboard.

                  **edit**

I'd also run a couple more safe scans tomorrow and sometime next week. Just to make sure whatever infected your machine isn't still on your machine.

You can also download Spybot - Search & Destroy.. but this program to non "techies" can be a little bit confusing as it warns you about every application that tries to run on your machine. At least it's side-app Tea-Timer does. So you're call. But if everything is good and running.. go by the old saying.. if it ain't broke.. don't fix it.

Ebay is a fantastic place to look for replacement laptop parts. And if you need help, someone usually has put together a step-by-step guide for replacing the keyboard.

I just had to do a clean reinstall of my pc due to some nasty virus that inpregnated my entire OS seems like. I ran everything from Malwarebytes, AVG Free, AVG bootleg, Super Anti-Spyware and anything in between. I had this nasty re-directing trojan that would redirect whenever I used my search engine. I think it totally invaded my network files and after trying eveything and fighting it for a week, I finally gave up an rebooted the system.
