    Adobe Photoshop

I have CS4, and I was wondering if any of you experts out there could help me. What's the best way to cutout a person in a photo?

    Specifically D. Rose in this

Magnetic lasso or quick selection tool work best. After that I'd go over they edges with the eraser then blur tool.

There's a few different ways to do it. What's best would depend on which tool you're most comfortable using and what image you're using. For general purposes I usually go with the polygonal lasso or the pen tool. Here's a tutorial you can use that goes over the tools you can use. It refers to CS3 but you'll have the same tools in CS4.

Quick select then refine edge, it's by far the quickest, easiest and most accurate. If refine edge confuses you can use the eraser and history brush to correct the edges, but refine edge is easy enough to figure out.

I was able to delete all the stuff around him, but I think when I use it, it still has a white background. Is there a way to only make it a cutout?

The checkered background means there is no background, so you're good to go. If you want to save it, make sure you're using a format compatible with transparent backgrounds. .PNG is a good one.

              Thank you!

I was saving it as JPEG, so the background looked white. I wanted it to be clear and only showing D. Rose, and .PNG worked.

JPEG is also a compressed format. I would stick with PNG for images unless you absolutely have to use something else (like something's not compatible).

Do any of you know if there is a way to make it as my Avatar so it's only D. Rose? When I put in in powerpoint or whatever, it's clear. But if I try to set it as my avatar there is still a white background.

I would ideally like it to look like Kruza's avatar, where it's only the image cutout with no white background.

Are you saying you want to make it the same color as the frame?

I don't think that will be possible, unless you sample the frame background color and you put it as a layer behind Rose. I don't know if everyone has the same color though (depending on the skin).

Oh, I though you were just able to insert a cutout image.

I'm going to PM Kruza and ask what he did.

If you just want the cutout then you should be able to use the saved PNG file. I don't know if OS only accepts certain image formats, but if you just upload the PNG file as your avatar then it will just be the cut out of D Rose.

Yep. That's exactly what I did to get this current Pistons logo. I downloaded this image directly from CBS Sports website. That site uses many PNG type images for team logos.

Weeks, I know you didn't have a background layer visible, but go back to the PSD file, try and merge your image with the non-visible background (Ctrl+E while your Rose layer is highlighted), and then save it as a PNG. See how it turns out then.
