    not unexpected, but still sad.

Atleast Jony Ive is still there, even if the general population doesn't know who he is

While this is a big hit in the short term, Tim Cook is more than capable as his successor. If you wanna buy AAPL stock, tomorrow's the day. Expect a huge market overreaction.

With his failing health, he probably won't be around the company much. He's been on medical leave since January and resigned specifically stating he could no longer attend to his day to day duties. Like bkfount stated, I'm sure he's prepped his other Sr. Mgmt and they'll be able to handle the duties.

From reports I've read, he used an experimental procedure to cure his pancreatic cancer and it's not going well. Worrying about Apple is probably the least of his problems right now....he's fighting for his life.

Hey! One more reason for me to love Apple, they now have an Auburn man as their CEO. WDE Tim Cook.

It's not often a CEO of a company gets praise from the public the way Steve Jobs did. Just like we have our sports figures who transcend their sport, I think Steve Jobs transcends the tech industry.

            Hope you get well, Steve!

True...and Apple's product plan for the next year or two is pretty well planned all ready.

I'm more just concerned long term because it was obviously Steve's mind, vision, and leadership that took Apple to where it is now. Look at when he left in the 90's, Apple tanked hardcore. While I don't think that'll happen immediately now, it's possible that the new leadership will start to make a few mistakes and Apple could fall from its perch.

There's no doubt in the very long term losing Jobs will hurt, but Apple as a company is set for at least 10 years. It's hard to mess up too bad, and even if they do screw up once they still have $76+ billion in cash.

To put things in perspective, that pile of cash could buy (assuming no premium) DELL ($28B), RIMM ($12B) and NOK ($20B) and they will still have enough cash left to buy NFLX ($12B)!

Precisely. That man is an industrial design genius and became one by studying the greatest ever, Dieter Rams.

Anyway, reasons like Ive still being there is why I don't think Apple will ever fall back down. First, Jobs is not only Chairman, but will continue on with his daily role at the company even after stepping down. This man will have a part in this company until he dies.

Plus, he's had so much time now to sew up himself in the Apple DNA, that his presence, ideas and focus will always be with the company. He basically hand picked his successor, so there is a plan in all of this.

The company's foundation is filled with people that were built from the Steve Jobs mold. The way they do things now is how they always will, as it's all they know after so long.

If you saw the latest picture of him, he won't be doing much work if any.
