Re: What's up with EA Sports this year?

I can only comment on NCAA as I am holding off on Madden for now.

NCAA is a good game...offline. There are some bugs/glitches but overall it's damn good. I've even had some super pissed off moments. Damn patch ruining my CPB's.

NCAA online is where most of the complaints originate. Online folk have a 100% legit reason to be PISSED.

This is because for 3 years, they had a weak manager who allowed that to become the status quo.I come in and its like no way, this is crap. Things are going to change. Really quickly people quit, and within a few weeks I have people there who want to work. Still though, they looked at doing their job as if they were "good" or doing something great, but in reality they are just doing whats expected of them. The culture of the pool made it so that a "great job" was just doing the basic job.
This doesn't jibe with my EA experiences (1999-2006) at all. Devs are given a budget (always smaller), a timeline (always shorter), and a demand for new features (always dumber) to put on the back of the box. I'm guessing your lifeguards weren't already working 70-80 hours a week (with no paid OT).

When I see things like that, I can't help but wonder what kind of resources (recording time, sound artists, programmers, testers) were allocated to Madden's audio team. Every single game I've ever worked on (14 to date), I've been well aware of the quality of the game - some good, some mediocre, some bad. Do you know how soul-crushing it is to work non-stop for months on end on a crappy project, knowing that there's a good chance you're going to be laid off at the end of it? It ain't fun.

Patches are a great thing IMO. I would have loved a way to have patches for the NES etc... lol
I've bought games that had killer bugs in them when there was no patches and that made the game a wasted purchase. At least now things can get fixed.
Bugs and glitches came before patches, not the other way around.

As far as EA this year I am very happy with them. Madden is a dream to play and while I'm an NFL over NCAA guy I still have fun playing NCAA also.

My whole thing with EA is that they will put out a patch, and while it fixes what it says it will, it breaks something else. They are just stuck in neutral.

Re: What's up with EA Sports this year?

After 7 years of Madden and 6 of NCAA on current gen, I have decided those games just aren't for me anymore. This isn't bashing, but last gen was better imo. The gameplay they just haven't been able to get back to that. It just doesn't measure up, and this years commentary is just plain embarrassing as well.

I am convinced its the overall engine that was created in a rush to get Madden 06 out in time for the launch of the 360. Now I know a lot of people don't believe that, and that's fine. I also definitely don't think it has anything to do with laziness. I think the Devs work very hard. You can only do so much with what you are given. Just my opinion of course.

I am excited to see what next gen brings though.

Good job of keeping this mature so far.

Re: What's up with EA Sports this year?

I think this has been a good year for EA sports but only due to how bad they had been previously. Its sad how NCAA kept improving every year on the current en and Madden kept getting worse and even sales reflected that. IIRC madden 2005 is still the highest selling madden. madden 12 might look better than 2005 but the game play is worse (only due to 1 thing though pass trajectory and defensive player jumping) and it has less features. Other than that though the other games like NCAA and NHL keep getting better. So overall id say EA sports is doing well. (if you dont count basketball). i just wish they would spent more time working on their big seller, if these small projects can improve why not a big one like madden?

Re: What's up with EA Sports this year?

I know there are bugs and glitch threads every year....

I just got the impression there's a lot more "How many have traded in ______ already?" threads....

And the NHL was just released to the season ticket guys, and already there's things missing (The three stars of the game) and lack of penalty issues.

That's what made me ask the question. Seems this year they focused more on visuals at the expense of other features.....presentation especially.

Just too bad I have no interest---zero----in FIFA and NBA 2k, both the games and the sports, or else I'd give them a look.

Re: What's up with EA Sports this year?

I'm only speaking from my NCAA 12 experience here.

To me, this generation has been all about online gaming. Shooters and sports games alike have gravitated towards online gaming and rightly so. That's where a majority of the core gamers play. The fact that a highly touted feature that's seemingly worked without major problems for the past few years and is now all of a sudden broken is unacceptable to me.

My online dynasty has been stuck for the past three weeks. We cannot advance because of these "transfer fail" issues. EA comes in and hypes up their product, hypes up their interaction with OS members, and touts new features for months on here before the release of the game. As soon as it's released, they vanish. To me, that's just bad business. Half of the battle is customer retention and to me, they are losing that battle.

I'm not asking them to answer every question asked or provide us with insider information, but at least acknowledge that you're working on it. At least acknowledge there is a problem and it's being handled accordingly. Don't post on twitter how the patch will be out at the end of the month unless you are 100% sure it will be out. Don't post that you've fixed issues when you haven't. Don't say you will provide more information soon and then leave customers in the dark for a month.

The game has been out two months (TWO!!) and we are finally at Patch #1 and Tuner Update #1, but they didn't even fix the biggest problem in one of their biggest features. Within an hour of the patch coming out the other day, plenty of OS'ers were on here finding new bugs from the patch. I mean honestly, what have they been doing for two months?

I guess I just feel spoiled by the interaction of the developers of The Show on here. They come here, answer questions, accept feedback, and are timely with any fixes/patches/workarounds. With EA, it just feels as if once they have your money they couldn't give a **** about it. Maybe that's not their goal, but their perceived arrogance and attitude portrays it that way.

They sure do. FIFA is far and away EA's flagship title these days, selling well over double the number of units that Madden does.

Absolutely correct. Bear in mind, though, that such information is usually released by EA Marketing, who sometimes write cheques that devs are unable to cash.

It varies per studio, but if I had to guess, I'd say they were working on NCAA 13. When I was at EA, patches were rarely given priority by execs. If management wants a patch out quickly, it's out quickly. The programmers who actually have to do the work don't decide such things.

Again, that stuff usually comes from the top. In my day, EA wouldn't allow devs to post in the OS forums.
