I haven't followed W8 development closely, but doesn't this mean you need a touch screen laptop to get the full experience?Comment

Pretty much. It all works on regular PC's, but its touch focused. The regular desktop is still there though.Comment

I'm download the dev build right now. I have an extra laptop that I'll put it on.Last edited by Steel5; 09-13-2011, 09:27 PM.Comment

Re: Windows 8 FREE Public Dev Preview being released tonight!!!
Well... I've been using it for a few hours now and I'm not sure about it at all. The idea seems great to have a full blown desktop and tablet mixed together, but in practice it's VERY iffy. Your constantly thrown back and forth between a touch interface and a desktop point and click interface. There's really no indication of which apps and links will take you where. For instance I was messing around in the control panel which pops up as a touch interface. I clicked on a setting and suddenly it shoots me over to the desktop version of the control panel. Plus it gave me no way to get back to the touch version. I had to launch the Start screen and go back into it's control panel. There's also a desktop IE and a touch IE. They share web history and such, but for the casual consumer out there that is going to be confusing as hell. They click on the big familiar E icon in one place and get regular IE, they click on it from the start screen and they get a completely different UI. It just doesn't flow very well. The tablet interface itself is awesome and would be great as a standalone. However mixing it into a desktop just doesn't work as well as I had hoped. I'm not judging this dev preview on the expected bugs and unfinished software, but judging on Microsoft's new focus for Windows 8 if you don't have a touchscreen DON'T upgrade. Navigating the touch UI is a bitch with a mouse/keyboard, and it's the default UI that will come up on all Windows 8 machines touch screen or not. The touch UI completely replaces the Start menu here. I had high hopes for this vision, but Win 8 is going to piss A LOT of people off IMO. Now that I've seen how it's going to be done, forcing the touch UI onto everyone is just not the way to go.Last edited by thmst30; 09-14-2011, 02:46 AM.Comment

I pray to god this doesn't get implemented on the business/enterprise side for a long time if ever. My life will be hell if/when businesses start transitioning to this."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

they'll probably be different versions, Like the professional and enterprise versions will probably have the desktop UI default or somethingComment

You really need to get Windows 7, if for nothing else that it is much more secure and much more stable.
As for myself, I'm not sure that I will touch the dev preview (only one computer, and I absolutely need my computer for my job, so I don't want to mess anything up), but I am curious about W8.Comment

I'm not sure where I've had a security problem, at least none I'm aware of and I can't recall the last time I outright crashed. I'd have to save all of my files and do a fresh install. No real payoff overall.Comment
