Re: Windows 8 FREE Public Dev Preview being released tonight!!!

I spent 4-5 hours with Windows 8 over the weekend and I like what MS is trying to do, it just needs some efficiency tweaks.

I can now navigate through Windows 8 with ease, perhaps because I've always been a keyboard/shortcut guy. I can see why mouse-first users hate the OS.

    Things I didn't like...
    • The "All Apps" area (right-click on Metro, select All Apps from bottom menu) needs to be a default tile. Users will spend so much time on in here and one of the biggest complaints is that users can't find this or don't even know it exists. This screen is the closest thing to the old Start menu. Win+Q is the shortcut.
    • I would prefer if the Windows key always toggled between the Desktop and Metro, not the Metro and your last-used app. The old Win+D shortcut still works from the Metro to get you to the Desktop (and pressing it again while at the Desktop still shows the desktop) but since users will be primarily switching between the Metro and the Desktop I think it would help. It would be like the old versions of Windows where the Windows key would bring up the Start menu or close it if you had it open already.
    • After installing software EVERYTHING you installed gets pinned to the Metro. This is insanely stupid and I hope there's a setting to change it. I installed the trial version of Office 2010 and every application in the suite was pinned (Word, Outlook, etc) which is somewhat understandable but then all the other crap such as the Language Pack was also pinned. So by installing Office 2010 I had about a dozen new tiles pinned to my Metro.
    • The bottom menu bar. Again, MS just didn't think this through. For years you right-clicked on an object and the menu popped up right where you right-clicked. This is efficient because your mouse cursor is right there so you can quickly choose the option you want from the menu. The bottom menu is the opposite, you have to mouse-over all the way to the bottom of the screen. In the situation I described above installing Office I had to right-click on the far left side of my Metro on each Tile I wanted to unpin from the Metro and then mouse over to the far bottom left of the screen where the Unpin option was on the bottom menu. And I had to do this 8-10 times. Very inefficient.
    • Another wildly inefficient process is closing an app you have open in the Metro. Alt+F4 still works but the mouse procedure is as follows: Mouse cursor to the top of the screen, click-hold-and-drag the mouse cursor all the way to the bottom of the screen like iOS/Android OS. Yikes. You go from click a simple X in the top-right of the screen to that?
    • If you don't have a Windows Live/Microsoft account then the stock tiles/widgets are useless. The Metro will be a full-page Start menu with your favorite apps pinned to it. You can group the tiles on the page which some users will like.
    • What used to take a click or two now takes 4-5 clicks. If you're a mouse-user and at your desktop and want to view all your apps you have to mouse-over to the Hot Corner in the bottom left, click Start, right-click, select All Apps from the bottom menu. As a keyboard guy though, Win+Q gets you to the same screen from the desktop.

    Things I did like...
    • It maintains Windows 7 smoothness and stability. I have the CP installed on a 5-year-old Dell laptop (don't even know the specs but it's a POS) and Windows 8 runs smoothly. No hanging, no stuttering, etc.
    • The Metro is NOT evil. Think of it as a full page, more visual Start menu. Getting in and out of the Metro should not be an issue (though I know it will be for many users). To me it's the OS version of iGoogle's homepage.
    • It's keyboard shortcut intensive, which is ideal for me.
    • Startup items are moved from msconfig to the task manager. Small but nice addition since the only reason I ever use msconfig is to tweak startup items.
    • The awesome Search functionality (quick & accurate) that debuted in Windows 7 is in Windows 8.

My final initial impression is that the Metro is cool and personally I like it but it is by no means necessary. If you eliminated Metro from Windows 8 and brought the Start menu back everything would work just swimmingly. I feel like MS is trying to be different or innovative for the sake of being different or innovative. It's not like Android or iOS where something is innovative and, most importantly, makes working more efficient or easier. I did not run across a single new addition that made me say, "Wow! Now that is SLICK!" like I seemingly do with Android on a regular basis.

I hope Metro is not included in Windows 8 Pro/Ultimate or that it can be disabled and the old Start menu back. I'm an IT pro so I adjusted easily but it will be a nightmare to transition users, even 20-somethings, to Windows 8.

Re: Windows 8 FREE Public Dev Preview being released tonight!!!

      Alright, I'm hooked...

I've brought home the test laptop and I've been using it all night. I really, really like Windows 8. I'm going to be a broken record on this but if you're big into keyboard shortcuts then Windows 8 is very easy to use. If you're a mouse-heavy user then you'll probably hate the OS.

I think a big thing for me will be how well the Metro apps integrate services from Google, Facebook, etc. For example, I set up my Gmail account in the Metro mail app but it wasn't receiving automatically and I couldn't find a way to manually refresh. I logged into my Gmail account in the Messaging app as well but my chat list was nowhere to be found. Things like this are big, obviously.

I can also see how Windows 8 can be useful in the business world. Using the Metro to organize current projects and work, not any differently from how users organize folders and documents on their desktop today. If MS is going all out on this GUI then I can't imagine they'll completely omit it from the Pro/Ultimate/Enterprise versions.

A HUGE thing that needs to be added is for a downward scroll on mice to scroll sideways in the final release. This is a must.

There are quite a few things that need to be fixed and cleaned up for the final release but I'm must say I'm very excited and very optimistic.

I'm hooked as well. It took me a couple of days to get used to doing some things differently, but once you learn it, it's very slick.

Re: Windows 8 FREE Public Dev Preview being released tonight!!!

I installed on one of my machines at work and have been using it the past few days for a few hours. I'm not as big of a keyboard shortcut user as ehh, but I adjusted pretty easily for the stuff I needed to do. I've been using the Windows key to search for any app/program in Windows 7 anyway so its not that big of a change.

Maybe I need to use it more, but the IE app in Metro felt a little wonky to me. I definitely preferred using IE in the desktop mode.

As an IT pro also, I hope the Pro edition ships with the desktop as the default screen with a Start button. I can imagine the nightmare dealing with end users who don't know how to navigate.

I can say though that one of the guys at my job who isn't so tech savvy loved the Metro interface and how everything was laid out and easy to access. So maybe those that aren't heavy computer users will also be into it more.

I also immediately hid the ribbon that pops up in Windows Explorer now. It takes up way to much vertical space and the things you gain on the ribbon are just easier to do with keyboard shortcuts.

All-in-all I'm definitely impressed on how smooth it ran on one of my older PC's. I'm fine with Windows 7 as my home PC right now, but I would definitely like to see how the tablets running Windows 8 come out. As popular as the iPad and Android tablets are, they aren't really practical for that much business use. If the Windows 8 tablets can run any programs that a desktop can I could see companies picking some up to implement in business.

Sandman - I've seen a few other people mention the problem with Windows Explorer but I'm oblivious - what exactly is the issue? A new ribbon? I don't see anything different from W7 in Windows Explorer.

BTW I agree on your tablet feelings re: the business world. I was given a first-generation iPad as a field tool last year and after 8 months I gave it back to my boss and asked for a netbook. Much, much better tool for me.

EDIT: Blah, just noticed it lol. The ribbons like in Office 2010. Interesting, I'll have to check it out.

I'm not messing around with my main laptop so I tried to install W8 on my 6+ year old Dell laptop and I found out through the install program that it wasn't powerful enough, lol.

I'm interested to see how W8 runs on a touchscreen laptop/pc.

I wonder if W8 will finally force companies to upgrade the OS. A lot of companies still use Windows XP.

W8 won't, but MS is going to stop supporting XP in a year or so. That will force them to go to at least 7.

I'm just amazed Microsoft still supports XP today. That OS came out a long time ago.

@Bold 1: Yeah after about a day, I switched to using the desktop IE instead of the Metro one. I'm all for embracing Metro, but for KB+M the desktop IE is just easier to use.
@Bold 2: Ribbon is minimized/hidden by default for me. I've opened it a few times, but mostly just use keyboard shortcuts or right click for that stuff.

I installed it and have been running it for a few days now, and my thoughts are as follows:
-Obviously built for tablets and touch screens. Using a mouse or touchpad isn't as intuitive.
-Agree with ehh about the Metro app screen having a bunch of BS on it besides apps.
-Had to make IE my default browser in order to use Metro IE. It isn't too bad but I'd like if it still supported my plugins.
-I do like the apps and app screens I've decided. Feels "fresher." I don't like

I've also had a number of glitches such as:
-Freezing when trying to play AVI with the video app
-Sound issues. Sometimes have to refresh pages in order to get sound to work right. Also have had issues with sound in video and have had to restart videos.
-Random freezing forcing me to reboot

All in all I do like it, especially because the "Desktop" is pretty much everything that you're used to from Windows 7 with a few minor changes. The Metro UI feels more like an added layer rather than a change in the OS. I do want to build a desktop sometime soon and a touch screen monitor will probably be something I'd buy.

This puppy RTM'd the other day and will be available to TechNet subscribers on August 15th, just around the corner. The rest of the world has to wait until the official launch on October 26.

Still undecided on if I'll upgrade my primary home machine, I've had a love/hate relationship with the previews of 8 while I've had a love-only fling with Windows 7.
