Dallas (2012 TV Series) On TNT

Any fans of the original? It's not a reboot and will have many actors from the original, including Patrick Duffy, Larry Hagman, and Linda Gray, but will mainly focus on John Ross and Christopher Ewing, the sons of J.R. and Bobby respectively.

Jaybee i'm waiting with bated breath for this. I amble on over to the official fan boards every once in a while as I don't want to go cuckoo over this but i'm really liking what i'm hearing about this show and it looks like Cliff will be back too! (not in the premiere tho) The big spoilerish thing that looks like it might be true is that...

    Spoiler

Seriously, if this show can balance the serious muscular drama of family and fighting for the family name with the more soapy romantic elements than it should do well.

Glad to hear that. It doesn't seem like there are too many Dallas fans on this board, but most people over 45 are. Needless to say it was a dominating hit. I starting watching it shortly after I got out of the Air Force (1978), and was a big fan until I lost interest about two seasons after Bobby came back (for me the worst season was the one without Bobby in it).

That being said, I'm not too sure about the young leads. I hope the "older folk" get enough screen time to steady the ship.

Wasn't a fan of the show, it was one of those "boring grown up shows" to me. I do remember story lines though. We only had one TV and my momma was crazy about this and Knots Landing. So yeah, I might check it out for the nostalgia factor.

Yeah Dallas followed The Dukes of Hazzard on CBS's Friday night line up. SO I'll probably do the same since every Friday at 7 I was in front of the t.v. watch The Dukes then watched Dallas the same reasons as you. But if we were to get a new Dukes show I'd be happy.

Yeah, Knots Landing, which a very "loose" spinoff of Dallas.

Did you know Knots Landing was the original pitch by David Jacobs to CBS but the CBS brass told him that it was too plain and vanilla so he created Dallas and backdoored Knots via Val and Gary.

I didn't realize that. I remember watching a full two seasons of it mostly because I liked Joan Van Ark's brief stint (as Gary Ewing's wife) on Dallas.

Probably some of the least memorable stuff I've ever seen on TV.

I never really watched the original, my wife is watching it now and it has kept my interest so far. Not a bad show so far.

Very good show and quite enjoyable. I found the twists and turns a little too much but here's my fresh off of watching it impressions I made at the official (fan) DALLAS forums:

Great start to the series. I thought the premiere episode was a little rough around the edges but the 2nd one was a lot better.

                          POSITIVES

                          - The acting of the younger cast was a lot better than I expected and I really love the Rebecca character. She's a very supportive gal but has a strong sense of herself rather than just being a cloying type. I also liked the Elena character as well and can see the situation she was in had her quite divided. I love the fact that she meshes so well with John Ross from the business sense but doesn't share his rather crude means of doing things.

                          - Aside from being a bit truncated and jumping into the fray I think the storyline is pretty solid with the whole Bobby/John Ross/JR machinations going on. John Ross doesn't fall too far from the tree but he's rough as hell. I like that he's uncouth and makes some mistakes and the way the 2nd episode ended with JR realizing that he's been set up by his son has me very excited for what will happen next.

                          - All in all the acting was quite good across the board and I love the sense of humor they have regarding JR what with all the references to him being elderly and such. It's a nice subtle piece of winking to the audience/humor that works a LOT better than the Komedy! of the latter seasons of the original series.

                          NEGATIVES

                          - Not a big fan of the short scene style of filming but they did it ok and thankfully scenes seemed to be a bit longer in the 2nd episode. Hopefully that will continue as we go further along.

                          - The scene where John Ross is at the old folks home and he's talking to JR I found that the actor (I forget his name) rushed through his lines and it seemed like an info dump.

                          - lack of a traditional score

                          WTF!?!?

                          - ok so JR is cooped up with clinical depression seemingly since 1991. That's just NUTS! I can't see JR being depressed for that long. You'd think JR would snap out of it due to some family issue or whatnot.
BTW the premiere garnered 6.9 million viewers and outperforming every show on broadcast TV that night. I'm hoping there won't be a significant dropoff next week.

Never watched the original. Never knew the Southern Cross Ranch they used in the original was in my hometown. Knew the ranch of the same name was there, just never knew that's where part of the show as filmed. What is even sadder is I know the people there and have been a few times. Definitely not in San Angelo lol. Southfork Ranch btw isn't on 1,000 acres like the original seems. Had my prom there, it's small.
