    Re: The Audiophile Thread

I posted earlier in this thread that my Heir 4a customs arrived, but I had to send them back for a refit. Now they're back and fit perfectly, and best of all they sound amazing. They're extremely neutral and accurate, so you only hear the song as it was intended to be (i.e. you won't hear more bass than than the artist put in the song), and I'm hearing details in songs I haven't previously heard. If there's one downside, it's that headphones with added warmth or kicked up bass can hide the flaws in lower quality recordings, and the 4a's won't do that. To give an example, a magazine can hide a model's flaws by airbrushing, but you're not getting a true picture of what the model looks like. The 4a's, however, present that true picture, but in return they need to be fed high quality sources. Thankfully most of my music collection is high quality mp3 and flac files, so this shouldn't be an issue.

I attached some images so you all can see what they look like. IMO, Heir makes the best looking IEMs, as the faceplates are made of handpicked exotic wood (I chose "afzelia burl" for mine).

If you don't mind me asking, what do these things run. I seen on their site they are $700 bucks, that is crazy to me.

Got the Sony Mdrzx600 today on an impulse buy. Good reviews and reduced to $58 on Amazon. I like them, but I don't think over the ear headphones are for me. At least not just for music, gonna return them and look into a pair of surround sound headphones for PC gaming.

Well I returned these and got the Plantronics Gamecom780 surround sound headphones just to pretty much give them a test run. Think I am just gonna return them, work some OT and get some Audio Technica M50. I figured I would get more pleasure out of amazing stereo sound then I would average "surround" sound. So I think I am flopping again...

                Re: The Audiophile Thread

On a PC you don't need "surround sound" headphones, you just need an audio device with dolby headphone and and headphones that translate position well, and if you want a mic buy a clip on mic.

I would suggest this headphone (M50 isn't really good for positioning):

                http://www.amazon.com/Creative-EF006...=operasport-20

If you want mic buy one of these (just note it will take a few weeks to get it as it'll come over on a slow boat from China)

If you don't have a dolby headphone device in your computer, you can buy an Asus Xonar card or a USB Xonar (if you wish or have laptop) for $30 or less

Don't need a mic at all. Just getting some in anticipation for Bioshock Infinite.

I got them during their Black Friday sale for $425, but having listened to them for awhile now, for $700 they are worth every penny. The only thing I don't like so far is that they come in a waterproof, crushproof hard case that's difficult to open. But I'm hoping that gets better over time.

Definitely gonna go with those Creative's or the M50. I have tested these Plantronic's on a few game and they are better than I expected, but they are USB and useless outside of the PC.

Yup, other than the fact mine is PCI and that's PCIE, it's the same card I have in my PC.

On the headphone front, quite a bit of my info comes from http://www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad-...-entry-updated as he's tried all these headphones specifically with positioning and I have not, I do own the Creative's but not the M50 but he says the M50 isn't great for positioning so that's why I suggested the CAL.

I have been bouncing back and forth between the CAL and M50. How would the M50s be for those with larger ears. I think I am going to make my final decision based purely on comfort.

If you think ear size might be an issue, neither are probably a good pick as they are both smaller full sized.

Creatives have better soundstage, are darker (bassier), and are more comfortable.

M50 are built like a tank, with a more balanced sound.

If you are worried about your ears, go into a store and try on the Bose, IIRC the cup sizes are pretty close so if you can wear the Bose then the Creatives shouldn't be bad at all.

Ordered the M50 today off Amazon. Was able to get free 1 day shipping by using Discover reward points. Ended up only costing me $90 out of pocket. I did that, then realized I am leaving for the weekend before they will get here tomorrow -_-
