Hey Leon thanks for chiming in

Yep I have an iOS device as well as android devices

I would like to use some of the apps, but mostly netflix and amazon streaming..maybe occasional vudu streams...

What type of files will it play and will not play as far as the External HDD and flash drive is concerned?

    Im curious about that

I don't think so. I guess that would be a problem if your TV/receiver doesn't have HDMI.

The WD boxes have composite, component and HDMI output capability. They give you composite and component cords.

Wireless adapter? Like an adapter to make anything function wireless that has the capability. All you need is to make sure that the wireless adapter you buy jives with your wireless router (cross companies do not matter apparently ... for example I have a Netgear wireless extender and a Linksys wireless-G router).

In order to cut cable, I went with the WD TV Live Plus HD (and you must have the Live versus other versions in order to stream). The other thing to consider is a Boxee and the Navi-X app. I also use XBMC for my PC.

Bought 2 refurbished for $110 (so basically almost one month of cable costs paying for it). I have one on my main flat screen so as to save wear and tear on my PS3 (though it will stream via my PlayOn application as well). The other is connected to a wireless extender in my upstairs bedroom (which definitely helps since my router is 2 floors below in my basement).

If you can get one new for around $70-75 that's a good deal, but my refurbed ones are working just fine. Well, actually, I had to send one back to WD, but they paid return shipping, etc. No hassles at all.

These boxes will net with your PC as well to play local media from any source on your network. However, they will not play every file type, but you would be surprised what they will play (.mkv files for example).

Make sure you check out the PlayOn application as well. I believe they still have the full 30-day trial. On the PlayOn site, they will link you to other sites of plug-in developers to expand its' use. The WD box will play Netflix, Hulu Plus, Blockbuster and other subscription type.

I keep reading that this thing doesnt have a netflix app

                      Is this true?

                      How about Amazon?

Yeah I was looking into the wd live also but it seems to me it has less apps like hbo go. The wd says on there site that netflix works but it doesn't show it can play amazon video.

Not having hbo go is a deal breaker for me. Also I like the idea of downloading other channel stations that are not well known.

What I see the WD have an advantage over the Roku is that its able to play all types of video files that the Roku can't. Which is not a big deal as most of my movie files are .mov and mp4 which the Roku can play.

I would still be using directv. I would get it for my living room that doesn't have a streaming device.

Yeah.. I totally agree with Rockin's last post up there... I see the advantages of the WD Live but in all honesty Im not interested in streaming movies saved on a computer and having to add extra hardware and using extra software just to watch the normal stuff like netflix

I was about sold on that thing too but its cool, I was about to skip it but it looks like I may go Roku afterall

btw, Rockin.. the newer version has netflix on it, but not the one shown in this thread

Dre did you get the Roku? If so how do you like it? I've been looking at getting one of these things for the bedroom and atm the moment I'm trying to choose between the Roku and Boxee. I'm leaning towards Boxee because from what I've been reading, it reads more file types but the Roku is cheaper. Can the Roku play MKV and MP4 at least? That's the majority of what I have saved on my HDD.

I didn't even know about the WD, I'll check that out too.
