That's the majority of what I have saved on my HDD.

I didn't even know about the WD, I'll check that out too.

Yeah I ended up getting the Roku instead

Can't what remember what made me rule out the WD at the time, but Roku worked for me.

I DL software and a few channels... and I was ready to go. Mostly only check out Netflix and Amazon, but there are a bunch of channels you may or may not be interested in, which I think they all have anyway for the most part.

What exactly are you looking for, maybe I can tell you if it may work for you

Re: Any of you guys use standalone streaming media players?

I just wanted another streaming device. We have the PS and 360 in the family room, but nothing in our room. We don't share the same tastes in a lot of movies and shows so I just wanted to have that option of going to the other room to watch something on Netflix, or Hulu or sometimes Amazon VOD or anything that catches my eye. If it's really good maybe it'll help finally get me off cable for good.

Was thinking about just getting a bluray player with some of those apps on it but the ones I've been seeing are getting iffy reviews. Besides, I don't watch bluray nearly as much as I stream or watch directly from the hdd.

Speaking of, I put a lot of movies and shows on an external hard drive that I'd like to be able to access in the other room. It's mostly mp4 and mkv, but there's the odd ogg and flac file here and there. That's why I was thinking Boxee, I don't think the Roku supports those formats.

What's the free channel selection like? Is there a lot of hd content available? Do you think it's a good replacement for cable? Any channels for sports outside MLB network hd or otherwise?
      PS: You guys are great.

I don't know about this particular Roku, but PlayOn has it with a lifetime license (normally $50 - $100 one time fee) for $80:

Thinking of getting the Roku 2 XS to stream MLB.tv in the bedroom.

What are the channels like? Does it basically just stream the live programming?

I have the Sony so I can't speak specifically about the Roku, but that's basically it. With the Sony you can also get music and hundreds of pod casts.

I don't like the fast forward interface on the Sony, otherwise it's adequate.

              That's good to know.

I don't get CBS Sports Network in HD here with Charter and I notice the Roku has that channel in HD.

Through Hulu or just part of a Roku package?

Usually those kinds of "channels" are more on-demand highlight streams. You can pick and choose which can be nice. PlayOn has the same stuff. WD TV Live and Live Hub also has Netflix built in along with other pay and free options.

I have a Roku and an apple tv device.

I don't watch too much tv but it's great to have on the fly

Have Roku XS on one tv and older WDTV Live on another. After installing Plex, I use the Roku way more than the WD. Plex gives you a "Netflix" interface. My tablet (Toshiba Thrive) recognizes my Plex server as well.

The WD live is very reliable and plays everything I throw at it though.

If you already have Apple products, an AppleTV is probably the way to go.

Thinking of getting Google TV. Does anyone have any experiences with it? I know they got off to a rough start but it seems to have improved recently. I wouldn't be using it to replace cable so I like how it integrates with existing cable service.

I might change from my Sony. I know it sounds stupid but a good Fast Forward interface is important to me.

I'm not sure how long this will last but via the WD Store directly from Western Digital's site, when you buy 2 WD TV Streaming boxes and apply the code "WDCARES" you get free shipping and an additional discount from the already reduced priced of $59.99 for one (+shipping). For anyone wanting to jump on board with WD products, this is going to be the best deal you get. And, as I've mentioned before, if a box is defective, WD will replace it for free (and if you call them, they'll pay for return shipping).
