I think she got some momentum from her Emmy win and they wanted some kind of comedic representation.

I'm a huge fan of Bridesmaids and I enjoyed McCarthy's "female Uncle Buck" character, but am surprised at her nomination. There's normally a bias against comedy roles at the Oscars. Remember the slight blow back when Marisa Tomei won BSupActress for her My Cousin Vinny role.

Supporting actress: Bérénice Bejo, The Artist; Jessica Chastain, The Help; Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids; Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs; Octavia Spencer, The Help

First time in a number of years I haven't seen anywhere close to all of the films being nominated.

Like others have said, I can't tell you if it's because the films were underwhelming this year or because I just didn't make the time. I think both are connected somehow.

Though, there are a number of films I do want to see.

I will also now spend the next month watching nearly every film that is nominated as that's a February tradition for me. Only difference is that it's gonna be a lot of work this year since I'm so behind.

War Horse and Incredibly Loud are the real question marks for me. I have no interest in seeing them, especially based on the reviews, but I was really surprised to see them nominated. Hugo gets snubbed, but gets a director nom?

Oscars make less sense to me than the Grammy's.

? Hugo is nominated for Best Picture. I'm thinking you overlooked it since it's pretty much the only one-word film on the list.

Honestly, what you said above should happen more often (though this time, it didn't seem to). A picture does not have to be a terrifically well-rounded film to be directed. Which is why I'm peeved that Hanna didn't make the cut. Of all the films I saw the past year, I thought that was the best directed film.

Of course, on that same token, I had wished The Dark Knight got a Best Picture nomination in 2008, but I didn't think it deserved a Best Director nod. I just don't think they should have to go hand-in-hand like that, because normally they just end up winning both. I like me some variety, personally.

how is it DRIVE is not nominated when pretty much all the critics loved it and all the people loved it, which is a rare feat in of itself?? Shame.

Also, I WANT Rooney to win for playing Lisbeth...but she has absolutely no chance in hell of winning the award.

War Horse at least fared 77% on RottenTomatoes. The one that gets me is Incredibly Loud.

Incredibly Albert Nobbs trailer. I think Glenn Close would be a shoe in if it wasn't for Meryl Streep. Although Glenn is 0 for 6 going for an Oscar Streep is an incredible 2 for 17.

Warhorse and Extremely Loud are the only two Best Picture nominees I was not a huge fan of, and I would have substituted 50/50 and Drive in their places. The others I thought were all fantastic, in particular The Artist and Midnight in Paris, so for those of you who haven't seen any of the Best Picture noms, I would start with those two films (if you don't want to watch a silent film, substitute Moneyball for The Artist).

Got tricked into watching Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close when another couple recommended it to us. What's worse is the wife of that other couple decided to accompany us to the movie to watch it again.

I'll leave out the lies we told to our friend about the movie.

My girlfriend and I did not like it. "Longest night ever" was used quite a bit last night and this morning.

I did like Sandra Bullock's performance. She's good and getting better. I didn't realize that the kid in the movie is borderline
