Not that I wasn't hoping for The Artist to win but I really don't understand these things. If One Night in Paris wins for best original screenplay and The Descendants wins for best adapted screenplay and they're also both in best picture how is it not between them? This isn't the Spike TV Videogame awards.

Best picture encompasses the entirety of the film from story to technical detail.

Totally true, but since 1980 23 of the 32 Best Picture winners have won the Adapted or Original screenplay award. From 1980-1994 13 of 15 Best Picture winners won one of the major writing awards.

Well, I guess it's easy to make The Artist an exception since its screenplay probably wasn't the most embarking thing of an almost virtually dialogueless screenplay. I'm sure that choreography was a notch above storytelling in this regard.

The audio was horrible during the show...we heard some beeping or something behind people's voices...

Has anyone here seen The Artist? Just wondering what a more "normal" audience might think of it...

I usually dislike when the foreign movies win, but that's more because I'm not as likely to have gone to see it randomly...

I had the same problem too, and it was practically making me hemorrhage. It was something with the microphone on the stage, because Crystal sounded fine the entire time.

I haven't seen it, and don't plan on doing so either. The only best picture nominees I have seen are Moneyball and The Help. I don't know if I'm interested in seeing any of the other ones.

Why were there only nine films nominated this year, and not ten?

I thought The Artist was fantastic. I also really liked Midnight in Paris, The Descendants, and Moneyball, but for the overall movie experience, The Artist was the best. It was something different, which was really refreshing. If you hate black and white movies, it may move a little slow for you.

Nominations are based off of a vote by the Academy that basically says how likely a movie is to win Best Picture. A movie must get 5% of the vote to be nominated. There can be anywhere from 5-10 movies nominated, but this year, only 9 hit the 5% mark.

Yeah, I have seen The Help, and will see Moneyball...Possibly The Descendents, Hugo, and one or two more, but usually I'm not that interested in a lot of the Best Picture movies...

Interesting that Meryl Streep's self depreciation routine included America saying "not her again". Although she is one of the most acclaimed actors in history her "batting average", 3 out of 17, isn't all that great. And before last night she hadn't won one in 30 years.

Which is why she said that. She was making fun of her drought.

Ratings up over last year, 39.3m viewers, up 1.7m.

But based on Facebook the Academy Awards are boring and no one watches them!

The show needs to be cut down to an hour and a half.

They already don't give anyone time to speak and always rush the most important awards because of lack of time.
