To me it's crazy that he's talking on the phone, remembering addresses and phone numbers, after shooting himself in the head at point blank range with a 38 Colt.

Agreed. It's almost spooky. I feel bad when the police come in and begin going through their procedures as if he's some sort of threat. He's basically just like, "C'mon, I'm laying here with a bullet in my head." So strange, sad and unfortunate.

Necessary pre-caution by the police. They had to assume he was a threat with a weapon on scene and a bullet being fired. I wonder if he felt anything other then a major headache, like ringing in his ears.

Daniel von Bargen's condition afterwards was kept very secret, and his death kind of went under the radar. He died March 1st at the age of 64.

I did too.... I had forgotten he was the lead prison guard in Oh Brother Where Art Thou? until I watched it again recently. Sad.
