Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

I want to build myself a PC with some of my tax return this year, but a lot of this stuff is spanish to me.

I'm sure I could put one together if I just had a good set of instructions.

I just want a PC that can run most games smoothly, especially Battlefield.

How much are you willing to spend? Are you wanting to play those games on high/max settings?

For your first time, I'd use the AMD Vision Engine Control software that comes with the drivers when you install/update them. Open it up and go to Performance>Graphics Overdrive and increase the GPU and Memory clock settings bit by bit. Here's a more in depth guide:

Yeah, you should be fine as long as don't try too much too soon. Just increase the sliders a little bit at a time and test for stability. Once you get to a point where you see artifacts (You can use GPUTool to test for stability) or game crashes, go back down a little to the setting where it wasn't happening. Eventually you will will reach a stable overclock and be good to go.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

As far as affecting your performance? Well you should get an increase in fps making games run a little bit smoother. How much, I don't know since every system is different.

If you mean how will it affect your card, like I said, just keep an eye on the temperature. I idle at about 37C and hover in the low 60's under full load. That's at default fan speed. You could be fine up to 100C but I wouldn't recommend going that far. If you find the temperature going too high for your tastes, then increase the fan speed to compensate. If the fan is too loud, then lower it and the OC settings to find your happy spot. You should be fine unless you try to go overboard, which I doubt you will.

It all seems pretty intimidating at first but you will get the hang of it quickly.

Yeah I need a walk through on this one man.

I think my default is between 30 and 49 degrees

I somehow got it to 50 once messing with some settings and it scared the mess out of me so I changed it back fast lol

Saw some moron on YouTube ramp up his settings and almost crashed his system and panicked and had to shut it off to recalibrate

I dont want to be that guy..seemed like it caught him off guard

It doesn't have to be max settings on games. I'm just looking to venture into a lot of games that are PC exclusive or offer some good mods. I deal with PS3 and 360 graphics as it is. If I got something that at least matched that or maybe a little better on games like Battlefield, that would be fine with me.

$800-1000 would be about where I wanted to be, but since I may not be spending much time at home in the near future, I may just try to find a good deal on a gaming laptop.

Ive been looking at this stuff recently and also settled on the 7870 but I wouldve gone with the Sapphire 7870 XT, better cooling (thus better oc potential) and quieter fan.

My PSU (at least) died and im hoping thats the only big issue as my video card had been acting up as well. The dead PSU is a PCP&C Silencer 750 but i want something modular to replace it. I was thinking Corsair HX650 but there's alot of negativity regarding fan noise on that model. Newegg has a XFX 750 for around 130 that looks to be a winner but MicroCenter unfortunately doesn't carry it (and I think we can agree if you're near a MicroCenter that's the way to go)

I love Microcenter for processors and motherboards... but the prices they have on GPUs are most of the time higher than newegg, amazon, tiger direct... I have found sometimes they will price match... sometimes they will not.

Most gaming laptops in that price range will be out of the loop for gaming in a year or so. Most for under ~1000 can run some of the newer games, but on mid settings. Might get lucky though.

I built my PC gaming rig that maxes BF3 out at 1080p for around 950. Granted, I am getting a second video card to CF and bought a monitor since. I spent over 1k, but initially I spent under ~1000.

They'll generally price match anything build your own from newegg not including promo codes. The processor prices are a no brainer, and the motherboards when bundled make for a deal you won't find elsewhere. (full disclosure - i used to work there)

AFAIK right now all I need is a new PSU, but the model i want Link they don't carry so I might just bite the bullet and grab it online.

The good thing about PC is that you can always upgrade in the future if you want. You could build a PC for $500-$600 that could play the majority of the games, not on the best settings of course, and then if you find that you like it upgrade the video card later on and be set.
