Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

FYI to anyone looking to get another video card or newer one.

7900 series comes with Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite codes for the full game when it releases

7800 series comes with Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider codes for the full game

Pretty good since you're getting ~$110 worth of games with a purchase.

I am buying a 2nd 7850 finally and CF them so for $199 (free shipping/no tax) I will get 7850, Tomb Raider, and Bioshock.

I just want a PC that can run most games smoothly, especially Battlefield.
I built my PC using this video, he has a whole set of him but this video strictly shows how to build, I would watch them all.

What do you mean by CF them? Stupid question, I know...I've been out of the PC upgrade scene for years at this point...

crossfire or SLI = 2 graphics cards in the PC.

Gotcha, they have software that helps or lets one monitor use both or whatnot...pretty cool, good to know!

I have no logical need for another card, but I want Bioshock and could probably sell the code for Tomb Raider and make it worth another 7870.

Yeah I had a 7850 and my fiance got me a second one for Valentine's day (lucky me!!!). I would like a single card but since I had a 7850 from before a second one in crossfire was within my budget.

The games are $110 if you buy them. One of the best bundle deals for sure.

built my pc today and running it right now. ssd is pretty smooth. my extrenal seagate 4tb drive should be coming tomorrow and am planning on using it as an internal drive for the new build. I also have a 1tb that was in my mx-1 enclosure that i'm thinking of using just for music. you think thats the best set up for the pc? 1tb for music and 4tb for downloads/videos/rips/etc. i'm assuming i'd need identical sized drives to do a raid, correct?

So my plan is to eventually build my own PC. I realize the cost going in: I want to build what I consider a "future-proof" PC (or as close to it as I can get). In that regard I don't plan on upgrading for a while. So I have a fairly expensive wishlist, and some of it is close to bleeding edge (but AFAIK none of it actually is). Here's my list:

Case - Cooler Master Storm Series Trooper: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119245

                          Motherboard - ASUS Maximus V Extreme: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131858

                          GPU - GeForce GTX 680 4GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130794

                          PSU - XFX ProSeries PI-1250-BEFX: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817207020

                          Processor - Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5 GHz Quad-Core: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116501

                          RAM - G.SKILL Trident X Series 8 GB (2x4) 240-Pin DDR3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231595

                          SSD - Samsung 830 Series 256 GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820147164

                          HDD - Western Digital WD AV-GP 1 TB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136941

                          Optical - LG Black 14X Blu-ray Burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136249

                          CPU Cooler - Enermax ETS-T40-TB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835214023

                          Here are my remaining questions:
                          1. Anyone have any experience with any of these products? I pretty well trust Newegg reviews but it doesn't hurt having extra anecdotal evidence of performance.
                          2. Any particular recommendations about substitute products for any of these that may be close to matching performance while hitting the wallet less?

I know this is an expensive set-up ($2.4k currently), and it is the first computer I will have built myself from scratch, but as I said I want a system that is seemingly "future-proof" and easily expandable when it comes to that (far down the line). By expandable I mean this setup supports SLI when I desire to install it as well as pretty much anything else I would like to add (more hard drives, decent sound card, etc).

Since I'm still fairly novice at computer construction any tips would be great! Also I've found I can get some of the parts cheaper elsewhere but it won't affect the overall price that much.

Be careful not to overspend on gimmicks that won't benefit you, for instance that ram. All that heatspreader and fan business is completely unnecessary, current DDR3 doesn't even need a heatspreader, it won't hurt to have one on the ram, but don't spend more for a fancy heatspreader that will probably interfere with your CPU cooler anyway (especially if you are going air cooled).

Another thing is careful not to spend a bunch of extra money "future proofing" that would be better spent down the line. I mean, you spend over $2 grand now and get a system only marginally faster than something at half that cost, then 3 years down the line another $400 GPU into the $1k system nets you something twice as fast as what you would have spent over $2k on.

Indeed I've heard spending over say $1.5k at the most is pretty wasteful. That's why I'm a bit worried I am doing something wrong. I was looking for a system that would play anything at the highest settings; perhaps I got a bit overzealous.

So my question would be, where do I make the cuts? I wholly admit I don't know much about the different RAM specs. I was looking for an eATX MB for expandability. Obviously the GTX 680 is nearly $600 by itself. I had heard that games weren't really optimized for SLI and that's why I was going for a strong GPU that would work effectively on its own--and then work well with the more demanding games coming out in the future.

Water cooling was something I am considering down the line, but initially (as I have limited experience) I wanted to stick with just air cooling. I doubt I'll do much (if any) overclocking at first.

personally I would start with the cpu and mobo... or if you are close to the Microcenter in Philly I would at least compare the price to that of newegg, you might save some cash.
