Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Im starting to think about building a comp.

    Thinking:

    i5-8600k
    1080 Ti
    16 GB 3000 RAM
    z370 Chipset
at least 6-8 USB3.0 for VR stuff
Hopefully a single M.2 500 Gig drive, but maybe a Optane TB 7200 RPM (anyone have optane experience?)

I want to build but keep going back to this prebuilt: http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...sktop_Computer

I don't have a ton of time to mess do this, and the money is not a huge barrier, but I am LOVING getting back int looking at Computer hardware. I haven't "built" a PC really since I had a VooDoo2 Video Card .

So, I ended up returning the parts I had ordered and bought an entire machine off of Cyberpowerpc.com during their (they had a big sale that actually made it cheaper than buying the parts individually, and they had the i7 processors in stock that were on backorder at retailers).

      CPU - Intel i7-8700 3.2ghz
      SSD - 500GB WD
      HDD - 2TB HDD 7200RPM
      RAM - GSkill 8gb ddr4-3000 ripjaws V
GPU - MSI GEFORCE GTX 1080
      Cooling - Corsair Hydro Series h100i V2 240mm
Mobo - ASUS ROG Strix z370-E
PSU - EVGA 750W Supernova 750 GQ Gold

Combined this with a new monitor as well. A refurbished Dell S2716DGR.

This was not a cheap build, but I feel like I got a decent amount of savings overall. One of the 120mm case fans seems to be a little loose so I sometimes hear a rattling sound, but it's not a big deal. Otherwise it runs pretty quiet.

The Dell monitor is beautiful. I haven't really played any games that could push the performance yet, but I'm not at all concerned about it. One of the comforting parts of this build is I should be very safe running games "high" settings 3+ years at now.

A lot of prebuilts seem to be cheaper right now than buying and building thanks in part to crypto inflation.

I went ahead and bought another Corsair water cooler (H115i), didn't want to because the previous one failed within 6 months but i sent that in and will get it back in awhile so i'll use it for a future server i'm going to build for my resort.

I also had a Corsair Carbide 540 air case sitting around i was going to use for the server so I decided to switch everything out and use this one. I also put in white led 140 mm corsair fans to match the case and make it a white and black setup.

Waaaay easier build than my previous Corsair case. Way more space and airflow and a lot more space for harddrives. Currently have 3 ssd's totaling 2.5 TB with one more available slot and two 3.5 HDD's totaling 8 TB. I also added a hot swap drive to the available optical drives and will be adding a card reader with more usb's.

Is there a good "one stop shopping" compatibility site to match computer model no. and part specs needed?

Not sure what you mean by computer model number.

pcpartpicker you can put in the parts you selected and it will tell you if it's compatible. Really the motherboard and CPU are generally the two that have to match up perfectly.

Pretty much what SuperbowlNachos said, you really only need to make sure your motherboard and CPU match socket wise, AM4 or 1151 for example. Picking out parts is easy if you go about it in the right steps.

First, pick the CPU you want. It will have a socket type, AM4, AM3, 1151, 1150, etc. Once you know the CPU you want and the socket that CPU takes then you can move to step 2.

Next, search for motherboards by socket type on Newegg. You will get a list of popular boards which will all work for your CPU. You then research customer reviews and official reviews to determine which board you want to go with. Now you have your CPU and Motherboard picked out.

Next, look at the supported ram timings for that motherboard.
DDR4 3200(OC)+/ 2933(OC)/ 2667(OC)/ 2400/ 2133/ 1866 for example. Now you know you need to buy ram in one of these timings. The higher the timing the faster but more expensive the ram will be. Now you can choose your ram.

From here on out, everything is pretty much plug and play (GPU, SSD, HDD, etc). Only other component you need to check on is power consumption. Use an online site to determine what size powersupply you need. Generally 750w will be more than enough for any build.

Thanks for the great responses gents. So if I take advantage of this deal (and it seems like a pretty good one from what I'm seeing around) and build my own, I pretty much should be able to add the components I want, provided my power supply is strong/high enough and make a pretty good gaming PC. I don't need top of the line but I'm due for an upgrade:

                      AMD RYZEN 5 2400G Quad-Core 3.6 GHz (3.9 GHz Turbo) Socket AM4 65W YD2400C5FBBOX Desktop Processor, ASRock Fatal1ty AB350 Gaming K4 AM4 AMD Promontory B350 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

Actually, what do you think about this kit for a midline gaming PC. I don't run any real high end games. I could put in my present NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 video card (2 GBs). Only thing is doesn't this need a separate fan for cooling the processor?

                        AMD RYZEN 5 1400 4-Core 3.2 GHz,GIGABYTE GA-AB350-GAMING 3 B350 MB,ADATA 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4 2400 Memory,WD Blue 1TB HDD,Phanteks Eclipse P400S Case,RAIDMAX HYBRID 730W PSU

                        or this puppy:

                        AMD RYZEN 5 1600X 6-Core 3.6 GHz, DEEPCOOL GAMMAXX 400-CPU Cooler, GIGABYTE GA-AB350-GAMING 3 B350 MB, GeIL EVO POTENZA 8GB DDR4 2400, 250GB SSD, Phanteks Case, EVGA 600W PSU

I'd go 1600x, granted personally I'd future proof a tad for only another hundred or so and get the 8 core 1700. Then you can always upgrade your graphics and play real high end games with zero issues for years to come. That 1600x is a beast but at 6 cores I'd just be incline to take advantage of how close the 1700 and 1600x are priced and get the 2 extra cores.

Instead of posting a new thread, I'll just post this question here.

I'm wanting to get a new portable external harddrive, at least 2TB, but don't know when is best time to be looking for one.

It's not something I need right now, but if I could get it by the summer, that'd be fine. Amazon is main place I'm looking, and what I find is most are around the mid $80CDN (high $60-low $70 US) range.

Should I just get it for the price it is right now, or might there be a chance the price drops at least 15% or so between now and a few months?

Get it right now. Only time PC parts and accessories go on sale really is during Black Friday, but they usually get snatched up very quick. Every once in a while Best Buy or Staples etc. will have one on sale, but those sales are hit or miss.

So I would just buy it. Waiting on sales some times can make you not buy anything ever because you would be constantly waiting playing the what if game.
