Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Got a 1440p 144hz monitor on Black Friday and just cashed in my holiday bonus and gift cards to get a GPU to power it and got a Red Devil 5700 XT.

I only messed with it for an hour or so yesterday but definitely a worthwhile upgrade. The RX 580 treated me well at 1080p but was not meant for 1440. Personally no issues at all so far, just used DDU to uninstall the old drivers then downloaded the new ones after installing the card and everything has been perfect.

Looking forward to a long day of gaming on New Year's Day. I've been waiting to start Control and I also got about 4 hours into Fallen Order when it came out then didn't play again until yesterday and holy cow that game is hard to come back to so I may just restart that.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

I'm playing MW at 100 Hz currently, and RDR 2 is getting about 70-75 Hz as I max out some other visual stuff. I can definitely appreciate a jump if I could get RDR 2 to get a higher frame rate, but for now I'm good with COD being at 100 Hz, and not having to sacrifice more to get something like 120 Hz (which my monitor can do), or 144 Hz (which my monitor cannot do).

And that's not to say I wouldn't notice the difference, but I don't think it will help me more when playing and I think I'd sacrifice too much elsewhere in the detail department to want to hit that. That, or it would require me to OC my computer, and I'd prefer not to if possible.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

I wasn't sure where to post this since I'm technically not building a PC. For the Spring/Summer I would like to revamp my computer area at home. Currently it's a massive dark wooden desk, dingy lighting, and a very outdated PC. Suffice to say it's not inviting at all and really the only thing I currently use it for is to pay bills and balance my checking accounts.

Basically I want to create a home work/study area. Simple desk with the ability to raise (or separate piece) the computer up and down to work on my feet for quick tasks. In the same space I want to bring over my guitars and amps so I can study music more effectively.

As far as the computer goes - I think I want to go with a laptop for the portability, but would also have a dual monitor setup and dock setup for "plug and play." I would like to do some gaming, but no major AAA releases or anything like that. At most I would be playing Rocksmith and indie games. Something for music recording would be a plus.

What do your guys computer areas look like?

Does anyone have any experience with the ASUS Zephyrus laptops? They look pretty powerful and can possibly be relatively inexpensive. I need a better laptop that can actually game too and I'd rather just buy a new laptop so can take that anywhere while also stand in as a desktop substitute versus having a desktop for home use and my current MacBook (early 2015) for on-the-go use.

I highly recommend ProStar/Sager Laptops. No bloatware at all and they use quality components.

So I need a new CPU soon here. My i7-4790k 4-Core 4.0GHz has be a beast but it's pretty damn old now. Unfortunately (or fortunately lol) with the new CPU I get I will need a new motherboard because my current one is maxed out with my current CPU. Also will need new Ram as well. I'm also wanting to go back to liquid cooling for my new CPU. With all that I'm going to need to get a new case because my current one (while big with plenty of room) doesn't work well with a radiator fan setup at all. I did a little research but damn is there a lot of information out there. So do you guys have any recommendations on a case of this nature? Thanks in advance.

I've always had a hard time with cases. There are so many out there that it just becomes information overload.

I would suggest using one of the custom PC building sites like cyberpower to help you choose. go to the build editor on cyberpowerpc.com and they will have a bunch of options separated by fan fan size. You could even select all of your components to make sure the case can fit them all.

No joke about information overload. I'm noticing that about more and more things lately. Who would have thought having too much information about something would be a bad thing. Thanks I'll take a look at that website.

Made the first purchase in my upgrade. Very pleased with my decision. It's gonna be a bit until I complete the full upgrade. Actually being smart, saving money, and buying in cash instead of using credit cards. Usually I'm too impatient to wait. Next up on the list is the motherboard and then the CPU. This is what I'm going with. Have enough to get the Motherboard very shortly but the CPU will take a little bit.

Came up on an unexpected bonus at work and went all in. Just finished my build and this is what I'm running now. It's freaking phenomenal.

                      PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: Intel Core i9-9900K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair H150i PRO 47.3 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
                      Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11 GB FTW3 GAMING iCX Video Card (Already had)
Case: Fractal Design Define R6 USB-C ATX Mid Tower Case

I have a **** ton of extra storage as well (in excess of 30TB). Also a 1000w really nice power supply that will last me forever.

So before when gaming a CPU heavy game such as Madden 20 my i7-4790k 4-Core 4.0GHz would be maxed out at almost 100% and run in the low to mid 80's. That's pretty hot. Idle it was in the low 30s. So obviously under load it just was burning up.

This new rig running the same game has the CPU running at only 30%-40%

and 40-50 degrees tops. The i9-9900k is an absolute monster. It's currently running at 4.8 GHz and the 8 cores just chews through any task or game. The case is amazing as well. As is the H150i. Super happy with this investment and will be good to go for a long while. Here is a pic I took. Not the best angle but it gives you a good idea.

Looking to possibly build me another PC next month

After thinking it over since i use my pc to work quite often, the 3900X is what im rolling with and possibly a 2070 Super because im not in 4K gaming market, but 1080p and 1440P at most is what im looking at.

What are you guys thoughts on this, even with newer hardware coming out probably late fall...

Budget going to be around 2,000

Also seems like getting a prebuilt and DIY prices are closer now than ever making me reconsider

I'd look at www.microcenter.com at their prebuilts. Hard to beat their prices. However, building one yourself may give you more of a better aesthetic and some internal parts may be slightly superior to what comes in a prebuilt. Just something to think about.

I did look through there this morning but they don't have the 3900x for anything prebuilt or stand-alone.

The 3700x might suffice but i don't really get the difference between the two performance wise yet.

I custom ordered my current pc in late 2019 through Cyberpowerpc.com. I've actually used them for my last several PC's as they are sometimes cheaper than DIY. My build is similar to what it sounds like you're going.

                              My main specs:
                              Ryzen 7 3800x
                              Nvidia RTX 2080 Super
                              32gb Corsair DDR 4 RAM
                              Samsung 860 SSD
                              Dual monitors, 1 Gsync 1440p 144hz and 1 older freesync running 60hz.

Overall it's been a solid build. I do occasional have hiccups with frame drops, and I can't figure out why. My previous build was an i7-8700, 1080 GTX, 16gb ram, same monitors, and it was fantastic until the day it died. So, I haven't figured out why better components have seen occasional loss of performance.
