To be fair I think Seacrest and Clark have been paving the way for that to happen for some time now so while he's nowhere near Clark there's at least a rationale to some of the talk.

Dick Clark was truly an icon and one of the savviest guys in the entertainment business. It's sad what that stroke did to him but I loved that he worked his way back to being in the spotlight again and indeed he looked a little better this NYE than he did in the last few years.

Clark was not only the originator of the dance show but he gave us the AMAs which helped to push the Grammys to at least pay more attention to the youth market when handing out awards. (there was a good 10-20 year stretch where the AMAs had more prestige than the Grammys) Clark produced tons of great television and was even a fairly good game show host with the pyramid game which I used to love watching in the '80s as a kid.

RIP to a TRUE icon and yes, a great American.

Really? I thought he looked 102 the last couple of New Year's.
Not trying to be mean but I thought he looked really old and bad the last few years.

Sad that his image has been tainted with the past few questionable appearances on NYE, but truly an American Pop Culture Icon...

Right up there with Jack Parr / Johnny Carson in the Broadcasting HOF impact sweepstakes...

That being said, if this was a game of "Clue", I'd put my money on Seacrest in the Library with an M-80...

I can totally see that for sure but I think culturally speaking Soul Train means means more to its specific audience than Bandstand ever did for everyone else.

Not to mention that he tried to jack the Soul Train audience with some bootleg version called Soul Unlimited. Don was justifiably heated behind that.

It's gonna be weird watching the New Year's Eve countdowns without him.

I continue to be amazed every time I see a post like this and I remember that you're 24 and not, like, 64 or something.

Why is it "justifiable"? Bootleg? What's bootleg about Dick Clark's efforts here? Bootleg as in illegal? The TV industry creates shows to compete with each other all the time. Every show you watch and have watched was created out of the desire to compete and beat the show in the same or different time slot on another station.

If anything, Cornelius took the AB idea and simply put an urban spin on the format and he did well with it, of course. Apparently they worked it out, co-produced some things and put it behind them.

Agreed. Even in his declining health, his NYE countdown show was an annual tradition.. RIP

Just because it's the norm in TV doesn't mean that DC didn't have to get heated about it. If Soul Train had not have done so well from the start, and started eating away at some of Clark's viewers, he wouldn't have tried to get them back by creating an obvious imitation of Soul Train.

I will agree with you that he took the American Bandstand and put the urban spin on it. But why not; there was only more of a focus on African American artists after Soul Train had started getting things popping and DC was getting all the African American viewers. That was a market that had not had a voice, with the marketing of products and services geared toward that community.

They still chopped it up like men and put it behind them, and were able to conduct business. I don't want to be THAT guy and seem like I'm pissing on my man's grave, so I'll leave it at that. I think I spent just about every New Year with him, so it's gonna be sad to have to ring in the New Year with an unfamiliar face.

Do some research. I just saw a show on Dick clark and Don C. and Dick was in the wrong. He even tried to get the Soul Train Dancers to come over to his new knock off show. Don C. was taking the money he made from Soul Train and putting the money back in the black community. Dick Clark was taking the money he made from his fake soul show and putting it in his pocket. Like i said there was a really good documentary on this on BET a while back. Dick was doing everything he could to try to make Soul Train fail when it started taking his AB viewers. Dick didnt even care if he show made it, he just wanted to take viewers away from Soul Train so it would be taken off the air and AB would make more money.
