RIAA claims Limewire owes them $72 trillion

LimeWire may have been shut down nearly two years ago, but that didn't prevent the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) from demanding money in damages. The RIAA believes filesharing site LimeWire owes them an estimated $72 trillion dollars, according to NME.com. You read right. That's trillion with a "t."
Compare that to the wealth of the entire planet at $60 trillion.

and this is why I download music for free and only buy CDs at concerts when I know the band is getting the proceeds.

I wonder how much the artist will get of that $105 million?

I never download music for free. One, because the quality isn't near as good and two, because my momma taught me better. Record labels need money too, especially if you want bands to be able to continue recording. NOt every artist can go fire up their own label. That said, this is a big reason as well that many record/cd stores won't be around much longer and that SUCKS if you ask me. I realize that these days the artist makes their money from touring, but I would still rather have my music in physical form rather than MP3 or other compressed garbage. While I hate corporate greed and think these charges are ridiculous, I hate self entitlement just as much.

I think I owe them about $14.63 worth of royalties on my own. Ya, I've loaned out a few albums in my day.

Yes it is true, though it may not be extremely noticeable to most, the more files are compressed the lesser the quality, it's a fact. Record/Cd stores are going out of business because of the MP3 market and pirating. That is also a fact. I say it sucks because that's my opinion. If you don't care for them fine, but it's my personal preference to have the actual disc or vinyl even with the liner notes and or lyrics.

It differs from person to person, but I have no remorse at all that some of these rich labels, etc aren't getting my $$

Who said you have to download a heavily compressed mp3 file?

Nobody, but I won't because I would rather have the best sound quality I can get. If there is only a song or two I like on an album, fine I'll download the MP3's from Amazon or ITunes, but not an entire cd. It's just my personal preference and sadly soon that probably won't matter much.

free music leads to more exposure for bands which leads to more ticket and merchandise sales.

That's why there are things like Spotify, Music Unlimited, Last FM, which allows you to stream the music and yet the artists still get paid. Pirating is NOT the way to do it.

Are artists paid by the listen on Spotify and Last.Fm, or are they just paid a certain amount to have their music on there? Cause if it's the latter, people downloading from other sites is not gonna affect that.

99% sure it's paid by the listen.

Before Spotify and other streaming services it was the way to go. I listen to all kinds of music including top 40. Sorry, not gonna pay $0.99 for the random song that is big right now and catchy for 2 weeks. I'll save my money to buy music from bands who deserve it.
