Music isn't about talent, it is about looks. Damn near everybody has and always had ghost writers that write their songs for them. And the reason they are ghost writers is simply because they aren't what most people would consider good looking.

Re: Kinda says it all don't it?
20 years from now this generation will be saying the same thing about how music isn't as good as what they grew up to. It's just the way we tend to glorify the past as we get older.
Regardless of one's opinion of what's popular right now though, and focusing specifically on the the artists listed above, you may not enjoy Beyonce's music, but guess what? She and her writers aren't creating those songs for you. They're popular, and they're popular for a reason, and as an artist and label, Beyonce, Jay-Z, and company are marketing and business geniuses, and know how to play to the trends and stay on top.
The lyrics and writing may not be as "good" as they used to be, but writing #1 hit after #1 hit isn't an easy thing to do. If it was, we'd all be millionaires. Hell, I can't stand Nickleback, or that genre in general really, but I can still admit that what they do, they do very well, and the money and fan base proves that.Comment

Saw that on Queen's Somebody to Love.
Though to some extent it goes both ways.
"They really ruined Led Zeppelin's song."
On Nightwish's Over the Hills and Far Away. Which is a cover but of Gary Moore, which itself is a version of a folk song.Comment

And then there's Prince...
He not only writes and produces, but usually plays ALL the instruments and often engineers...
He and his "one man recording team" predecessor, the late great Johnny Guitar Watson:

Bottom line:
There's good, bad and indifferent in every era of every genre of music...
But yeah, six way split on that Beyonce track is kookles...

Re: Kinda says it all don't it?
Youtube always has comments on older music that says, "Ahh..the days when music was actually of substance...etc."
I'm 40 now and my time had what is now.
NSync/NKOTB
Gaga/Madonna
And then...
Radiohead/The Doors
You can draw comparisons all day. I think though that the challenge today is that the history of music has some solid definitions. Elvis, Sinatra, Bennet, The Beatles, Metallica..
All these venues are so established as a standard that it is really difficult to set one today.Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.Comment

6 writers doesnt mean anything.
A writer could be credited for coming up with a hook, a melody and even the instrumental. 6 writers could be credited but only one person could have actually wrote the lyrics..
Heck, a mix engineer could technically get a credit for being a writer for making an edit..
...And Producers are nothing more than supervisors...Last edited by Jukeman; 07-12-2012, 11:24 PM.Comment

Re: Kinda says it all don't it?
What?
Anyways, that's far from the main thing that's wrong with today's music.
To me it's the fact that damn near everything is made to be some club/techno/house music song. I think there's a video on Youtube where someone gets a bunch of top 40 songs or whatever, plays them together, and they all pretty much sound exactly the same.
Now all that said, it's not like it's hard nowadays to find good music and filter out the bull**** or what you don't like. I know personally I couldn't tell you what the majority of the top songs being played on the radio are because I have my own radio - my iPod.

EDIT - People have to accept, that music is always changing, there are always going to be fads and phases and phases that will become popular. Like right now, it's the house/dance phase. Personally, I feel like most music now is over commercialized anyway, and you have to dig deeper to find the stuff with substance.
But like Jay said, "N****s want my old ****, buy my old albums"
If you don't like the music today, or don't think they are talented, don't listen to it. No one's putting a gun to your head.
Guys ever heard of YouTube? Can listen to old music all you want! Plenty of Freddy Mercury to go around.Last edited by JODYE; 07-13-2012, 12:29 AM.Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

Re: Kinda says it all don't it?
This is one thing people can't take away from metal. They write their own music, from the lyrics to the instruments themselves.
There are some exceptions, but for the most part, it's true.
Know what's ruining my favorite genre ? ****ing dubstep and "bands" like skrillex..Comment

Re: Kinda says it all don't it?
What's wrong with music today is that so much of it is "wash, rinse, and repeat". Once an artist becomes a mainstream success, the record labels or who ever decides it's time to release the same kind of album over and over again. The industry is a saturated with groups that all sound alike because that's what is selling. Also seems that the worst music is the most popular music.
Country shouldn't even be called country anymore, as very few are truely very country. It's more pop/rock.
Pop music is overall lame in my opinion. There are very few pop artists worth listening to and many of the songs are repetitve. Alot of them aren't really talented. Most have someone else write their songs and someone come up with their dance routine. It's all show, no substance.
What bothers me most about rap is how many people act as a result of listening to it. They think they are gangstas or ballers, ect ect. Then they start talking like rappers and quite honestly it's very unbecoming if you've never truely lived that lifestyle and such. I don't listen to it because I have children I would rather not subject to that kind of explicit subject matter.
Rock has it's issues too. Like how every band these days wants to sound like Nickelback, Three Days Grace, or Korn. Korn were once good. Nickelback and Three Days Grace have never really been all that great, yet so many love them.Last edited by savoie2006; 07-13-2012, 01:54 AM.Comment

As far as rap goes, keep in mind that what you likely have been exposed to is just a certain representation of the genre. Many less popular artists create music that is thoughtful, lyrical, and even poetic.
In fact, see my my avatar for an example of immensely talented musicians that are labeled as rappers.
