Nah, I believe he has a fear of germs. But how does he live day to day that way? Germs are everywhere.

Howard Stern also has this phobia, albeit not as severe as Howie.

Heard a story on Adam Carolla's podcast about a time Marshall Faulk met Howie. Marshall tried to shake his hand and Mandel politely fist bumped him or patted him on his back. When told by someone that Mandel doesn't shake hands because of germs, Faulk didn't believe it, walked up to Mandel again and just grabbed his hand. Mandel freaked out and ran to the nearest restroom for like 10 minutes. The good thing is Mandel is an advocate for mental health, and feels much better that his phobia is out there and documented. He feels more comfortable out in public. And you were right about his glove gimmick in his act back in the day. He carries those around everywhere.

I am someone who deals with the OCD of fearing germs. It's something you just have to manage. People who suffer from this all have their different ways of dealing with/avoiding germs.

I may not be as severe as some cases out there, but I have things I have a hard time dealing with. I wash my hands more times a day than I can count no matter where I am. I will avoid touching certain things where I can as well. I don't like shaking hands, but if I have to, I will wash my hands right after. Gas pumps are one thing I refuse to touch with my bare hands. I'm not going to list everything since this isn't the thread for that, but just wanted to give a little info from someone who deals with it.

I'm the same way as above. I'm not at Howie's level but I am OCD when it comes to germs and there are certain things that freak me out.

Watching me cook is hysterical. I wash my hands before/after touching anything, I was utensils multiple times during use, etc. I also check silverware before I use it. It sucks but it's just a habit now.

So this is what it sounds like, when doves cry!....For real. As a kid we saw a film on germs and washing hands. I took it to heart, and washed my hands like 20 to 30 times a day. To the point of my hands drying out and cracking. We went to a doctor and he told me to wear gloves that had a teaspoonful of vegetable oil in them. I had to wear that crap to school! Sure my hands got back to normal real quick, but I got teased and laughed at for wearing them. That took care of any issues I had with my hands for good. Wash 'em after the bathroom and before eating. And I am fine with that, just keep the gloves away from me.

Did you know? The very first, unaired pilot of "Three's Company" had John Ritter playing "David Bell", an aspiring filmmaker, NOT a chef.

That pilot can be seen on the DVD set.
