For those that wear glasses (like myself), 3D clip-ons for $12.21 shipped (LG 2011-2012 sets only)

I wear glasses, so wearing the 3D glasses on top of those is a ****ing nightmare with reflections and stuff. I will, generally, see the 2D alternative if the options is available. Avatar is the only 3D movie I've seen that I felt it was worth it - and I still had to deal with the dizziness for a bit.
      This

Also in my case I only really have one good eye so while I get most of the 3D sensation but i'm not getting the entire effect. I also found that after sitting for 2 1/2 hrs watching the Avengers that I was starting to get a slight headache. Luckily it wore off when I took the glasses off but I suspect that if I had seen that movie in the day and came out in sunlight my eyes would hurt a lot.

Personally, I don't see all this crap as being worth it. DVDs and Blu-ray are fine as it is. Why do we need to go to all this trouble with 3D and then this whole 4K nonsense. I can see with this kind of technology we'll have even MORE fat slobs staring in front of their TVs all slack jawed and the obesity crisis getting even worse.

I dunno, I just don't see the appeal. I'm probably in the minority so take my comments with a grain of salt.

3D is a feature/new way to watch something. 4K is a larger resolution (four times that of 1080p, in fact).

I wouldn't consider that "gimmicky," but it's much less worthwhile for the majority of us. If you're below 100 inches on your screen, nobody should be investing in 4K products as soon as it hits. If they became as cheap as things are for us in today's generation, then I'd take the plunge if I could upgrade my media without a hassle.

However, I'd like to see Blu-ray last ten years at the very least before they make the transition (so at least four more years).

I think that's the key. I think I would be thrilled with this kind of technology if it's easily transferred to "normal" size TV screens rather than needing something that's 80 or 100 inches just to enjoy it. The cost is going to be through the roof but I think if they quietly introduce these things to the market at those prices while we're still in the current generation of media and as the current gen starts to lose feasibility than the newer stuff should be good to get on a regular size monitor and be relatively cheap.

That's the one huge difference in the upgrading of technology the last couple cycles in that it's staggered rather than a new evolution totally wiping out the old (analog to digital, VCR to DVD) I can also see some of the things in this generation sticking around for a much longer time frame. VHS had a shelf life of about a decade but I can see the regular run of the mill DVD player lasting 2-3 decades easily. (The DVD player has been around since the late '90s and now we're in the early 2010s so we're almost at 2 full decades already)

For the naked eye. the only way you could see any difference with 4K is if you're sitting less than 5 feet away from a 60+ inch screen. It's a wasted technology for the majority of home viewers who sit 8-10 feet away and have 50 to 60 inch screens.

Re: What do you think about 3D movies?

I have a top of the line 64" plasma (Samsung PN64D7000) that, of course, has 3D capability. I have NEVER utilized it and never plan to in the future. I had my set calibrated by one of the best ISF calibrators in the country (Chad B.) and I am so happy with my PQ that I couldn't imagine enjoying it any other way. Every time I have watched something with the 3D glasses on other sets, who things happened. One; the PQ was horrid compared to my calibrated 2D picture. Two; I got a really dizzy feeling afterward.

No 3D for me. It's nothing more than a fad as far as I'm concerned. It was also big for a while in the 50s and then it died out. Then it caught back on in the 80s for a while again and died out. Now that we're in the 10s (notice the 30 year cycle each time) it is back, but will again die out eventually. History just has a way of repeating itself.

And Seymour Scagnetti (still my favorite username on this site) nailed it regarding the 4k technology. It is just redundant, to say the least.

I'm not a fan of 3D. It's really just a silly way for films to sell more tickets.

Love 3D. Especially gaming. 50" Plasma 3d. Got it during a sale with 2 pairs of glasses. Also bought a 3rd pair. (Shutter).
Just another way to enjoy entertainment for me.

I think 3D movies are good but I have seen in some scenes they are 2D and while you watching for long you eyes starts paining sometimes it blurred.
