    Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

I enjoyed the movie...a good sequel that for me personally didn't surpass the enjoyment of the first, but kept me engaged nevertheless.

Primary minor complaint: One too many "zingers" and "one-liners" designed to make you laugh.

Primary major complaint: The primary villian. Since Nero's space jump (in part one) only impacted the things that happen in time after his space jump occurs, then the villian should have been the same race/nationality as his Original Series counterpart. Ev'one else is their original race/nationality....Spock, Uhura, Kirk, Scotty, Sulu, etc. So why change the villian's race/nationality? This took away some of the immersion factor for me. Also, villian needed more face time to express why he is so evil...not just bent on revenge...but beyond seeking his revenge, why was he so evil?

      Auditioning could change that.

I suppose they could have gone without assigning the villain that exact name, though.

I agree about the one-liners thing, though. I enjoyed the comedy portions of it (and I thought that Simon Pegg's role was more serious and for the better), but the one-liners that are specific to the characters seemed to be a bit over-abused. Bones always saying "I'm a doctor dammit not a ______________," he and Scotty using metaphors left and right, and Spock speaking a little too much about logic and mathematical precision while the other characters were rolling their eyes about it was just a bit too much. Then of course, Kirk womanizing...

And then you don't do that and you must face the wrath of the Trekkie Nation!!

Well see, I'm fine with one of them. When the other characters are speaking for us in asking them to stop with it though, then you know it's been overdone.

Exactly, you have to do it to appease Trekkie nation, as daflyboys says, but they went way overboard. Oveboard to the point where they took away the charm of it, which they captured perfectly in the 2009 movie, IMO.

It's like JJ said, "ok, give em 50% more action and 75% more comedic releif." The latter was overdone.

Yeah, in TOS and the 2009 movie, Spock did a better job of just being logical without always saying, "You know, I'm just being logical."

I see you don't agree? Let me explain. I like the new "emotional" Spock. And trust me, I'm as "Trekkie" as they come. Had the action figures, the bridge where it had the transporter you spun around, belt with tricorder, phaser and communicator. Loved Nimoy with all my heart. Even watched "In Search Of." But this new Spock is getting to express himself, to share what had to be going in inside of him all along. I like that he gets to have a girl. I love the inner conflict and the quite impressive outbursts. I loved the threeway convo in the shuttle. I love how Spock is getting to feel, and be "human." A lot of purists don't. I've read a bunch of reviews that show how big of a deal this is. I feel it. He's not only having to deal with his inner turmoil about his half human heritage, but also having had his mother killed before his eyes. And he's evolving and becoming a character that Nimoy was never allowed to be. All because of the genius of the alternate timeline approach. Best decision, ever.

I loved Spock the old, but this one makes him seem boring. Heck, Quinto even is overshadowing Pine's Kirk, IMO. And Kirk even said so in the movie. JJ and screenwriters know where to hang their hat, and have done a masterful job of giving Spock the respect he deserves. I'll always love Spock, I just think the new one is what the old show should have allowed the character to become. Not some glorified sidekick to cool, pimp daddy Kirk.. Just my two cents.

On the contrary, I really liked TOS episodes where Spock wasn't exactly all that contained and there were quite a few of them:

*Horny Spock who had to fight to get laid every 7 years.
*Horny Spock who got sprayed by the funky plant on the colony planet
*Horny Spock who was thousands of years in the past and thought about killing Bones so he could have Mariette Hartley all to himself

*Goatee Spock who, well, let's face.... was just bad *** Spock!

I thought they developed his motive pretty well in the movie. That scene when he said why we did it was pretty emotional and benedict was awesome in that scene.

And to be fair... Sulu is Korean in this movie :-)

Right, to me that explained why he wanted his revenge. But beyond killing the guy he wanted to kill, why be so evil? Just because he's superior? His character wasn't given enough lines to sell it, IMO.

Good lookin on the Sulu thing, as I can't say what the exact nationality of the original cast member was compared to the new guy, but the point being they are at least from the same continent. I'm guessing Pine and Shattner are probably not from the same European country of descent, but at least they look alike. That was my point. LOL if they had given Scotty a French accent or Checkov a British accent. But then they totally took the Villain's accent completely away.

Anyway, still a great movie. But with some of the lack of attention to detail, I'd be surprised if we get a third one from JJ anytime soon (before 2017).

Isn't Star Trek's 50th Anniversary in 2016? I'd say it comes out then.

Yup, pretty sure TOS was '66-'68. I heard Abrams didn't get the full control over the franchise he was seeking and has now turned his full sci-fi attention to star wars.

I loved the Star Trek.(Got in for free so that made it better )
Iron Man 3 was the last movie I saw in theaters and Star Trek was light years better. I actually felt something for the characters. The comedy didnt seem forced to me like others have said. I did however feel that way about Iron Man 3. Im not a trekkie but I assumed it had a lot of nods to previous movies or shows. I'll def see it again or buy it for my iPad. Villains make or break these type of movies and Star Trek's villain was awesome.
