It’s still probably too soon to say a sequel to Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim is a sure thing, but the chances for another film grew this week as the film opened big in China. For any big-budget movie, international box-office is increasingly important, and global returns can make or break a film that doesn’t explode at the US box office.
And so with a $9m Wednesday opening in China, the film has an international take that tops $150m, pushing it towards the magic number that could equal a green light for the sequel.

I'm still cautiously optimistic. I'm hoping rentals/video purchases will push it over the edge if Japan and China don't do it.

Sequel is being written.

We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate.

Blu-ray also came out yesterday.

One annoying thing for me (not a plothole, does include spoilers):

At the beginning, during the opening, Hunnam's character says of he and his brother: "We have a unique skill...we're drift compatible" but then later in the movie it only takes a stick fight to see if you're drift compatible? Doesn't seem too "unique" to me. Especially given that all of other teams are related and everything and that does seem like something that is unique through blood and what-not.

I watched X3 last month again (before seeing Days of Future Past), and I enjoyed it much more than I remembered. It just seemed like people had a beef with some major characters being killed off.

I wouldn't be too disappointed by this news; I'm sure the dude will be fine.

No I just think X3 was a horrible movie. But I blame Ratner for that not the script writer as I'm pretty sure that movie went through about a million drafts.

Pacific Rim was a top five script or something? Definitely not why I watched it. I'll watch Pacific Rim 2 without expectations to be moved to tears just like the first.
